Service-Driven Research
Finding a Calling
A diagnosis of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome at age 14 shaped Elizabeth Caldwell’s desire to study rare diseases and pursue a medical career. The genetics major has been engaged in research since her first year at Clemson, working in an associate professor’s laboratory to better understand a rare immunodeficiency disease. She has completed shifts in a trauma bay at a local hospital and interned in the pediatric oncology education program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. On campus, she co-founded an organization, Tigers 4 Accessibility, that aims to create a more inclusive environment for students with disabilities. Elizabeth credits these opportunities with laying the foundation for her to make an impact as a doctor and serve her patients as an advocate.
