Scholarships & Finances

You've decided that you want to study abroad--that's great! You may now be looking for sources to fund this important academic experience. First, you should check with the Clemson Financial Aid office, as well as start thinking about your personal budget.

You may also be interested in investigating the following scholarships.  Be sure to start the application process as early as possible and check the individual websites for deadlines. Often application materials are due 6 months are more ahead of the start of your program.

Bowman Scholarships
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) awards Bowman Scholarships to undergraduate students who wish to study in a Third World area such as certain countries in Asia, Africa, or Latin American. The grants cover the transportation cost from site to site.

Bridging Scholarships for Study in Japan
This scholarship provides a stipend for undergraduate students participating in study-abroad programs in Japan. Students in any major are eligible and Japanese language ability is not required. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Selection is based on academic potential and financial need.

British Council - UK Scholarship Listings
The British Council provides a list of scholarships available to U.S. citizens for study at universities in the UK. This list includes both graduate and undergraduate scholarships.

DAAD Scholarship Programs for Study and Research in Germany
DAAD grants are available to faculty and students in Canada and the United States to participate in various academic activities. In general, applicants need to be U.S. or Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In certain cases foreign nationals enrolled or employed at universities in North America may also be eligible to apply.

DiversityAbroad.com Scholarship Directory
Scholarship directory contains funding opportunities for multicultural students, community college students, and university students, as well as high school students. Students can save scholarships they are interested in, ask for reminders by email two weeks prior to deadlines, and forward scholarships to friends.

Freeman Scholarships - Awards for Study in Asia
Freeman scholarships are available for students wishing to study in a number of Asian countries. These include, but are not limited to Japan, China, Korea, Singapore and Thailand.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship
This scholarship is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. The scholarship is available to students with financial need and encourages applications from students who are underrepresented in study abroad.

Pamela Harriman Foreign Service Fellowship
This is a highly competitive fellowship (3 per year) offered through the College of William and Mary. The fellowship provides an eleven-week summer service opportunity with the U.S. Department of State plus a $5,000 stipend at one of three posts: the U.S. Embassy in Paris, the U.S. Embassy in London or the Office of the Secretary of State in Washington.

Hispanic Scholarship Awards Program - State Farm
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) selects Hispanic college students to receive State Farm
Companies Foundation-sponsored scholarships. Recipients are selected for academic accomplishment and demonstrated leadership skills. For application and selection criteria, contact the Hispanic Scholarship Fund:

Institute of International Education Grants
The Institute of International Education manages over 250 programs for international study and offers numerous grants and awards for these programs. You should carefully review the IIE website to see if you qualify for one of these programs and scholarships.

IIEPassport: Study Abroad Funding
This resource allows you to search by country or subject to find study abroad funding information. Includes scholarships, fellowships, and grants for undergraduate as well as graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral research. 

International Trade Scholarships
These scholarships are awarded by the S.C. International Trade Conference to students with a proven interest in international trade or a related area.  Applications are normally due in early May. 

National Security Education Program
This scholarship seeks to increase the ability of Americans to communicate and compete globally by understanding the languages and cultures of other countries. Each year, NSEP offers American undergraduate and graduate students scholarships to enhance their understanding of cultures and languages critical to U.S. national security. These scholarships are valid for study in countries outside Western Europe, Canada, Australia or New Zealand. Open to U.S. citizens in a degree-granting program.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants
The Honor Society Phi Kappa Phi offers 50 Study Abroad Grants of $1000 each.  Students do not have to be members of Phi Kappa Phi. 

Rhodes Scholarships
Rhodes Scholars study for two and, with special permission, three years at Oxford University in Britain. Study can be in any field and must lead to a degree. Study can be at the graduate or undergraduate level. Some Rhodes Scholars study the last two years of an undergraduate major. Others do graduate study. The Rhodes pays for tuition, fees, travel to and from home to Oxford, and an allowance that is sufficient to pay living costs during the academic year and vacation periods.

Rotary International Scholarships
Rotary International offers very generous scholarships through its Ambassadorial Scholarships Program. It is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. Visit the Rotary International website for more information and applications.
