Unit 1: Managing the forest site – February 7, 2006. This session will concentrate on managing the forest site rather than outputs such as timber, wildlife, recreation or some combination of these.
Topics will include the soil system and the water system and how these systems need to be managed to allow long-term sustainability of the forest. Two other topics will be aesthetics and managing the forest on a landscape scale.

Unit 2: Forest Management Options – February 14, 2006. This session will present case studies of management prescriptions for a variety of forest stands. Each case study will show steps to develop and maintain the forest stand for timber products and to continue the stands on a sustainable long-term basis. Low density management options will be discussed such as managing residual stands following hurricanes and natural disasters for each forest stand presented.

Unit 3: BMP’s and Water quality – February 21, 2006. There are many best management practices that influence how forests are managed. This session will concentrate on forest best management practices for: streamside management zones (SMZ’s), forest road construction, managing forest roads, and pre-harvest planning.

Unit 4: Controlling Unwanted Vegetation – February 28, 2006. This session will concentrate on practices to control undesirable vegetation on forest sites. The vegetation being controlled will vary from low value hardwoods in hardwood stands, to invasive plants, to herbaceous vegetation during establishment, to favoring native herbaceous vegetation after establishment, to managing for wildlife, to managing pines for fiber. Techniques will include mechanical systems, herbicides and fire.

Unit 5: Forest health – March 7, 2006. This session will provide an overview of forest health issues and will concentrate on managing stands to maintain forest health. Topics will include: an overview of forest health as influenced by natural phenomena and how to manage forests to accommodate natural phenomena and maintain forest health; and major forest insects and diseases and managing stands to prevent these problems and maintain forest health. Conditions which increase risk such as stand composition and interactions with the forest site will be covered.

Unit 6: Forest Measurements and Forest Products – March 14, 2006. This session will concentrate on some of the products available from the forest and the standards for each of the products as well as how to manage your forest for each product.

Unit 7 Wildlife Habitat Management and Landowner Success Stories– March 21, 2006. This session will deal with two topics. The first will be management practices to enhance wildlife habitat on your forest by establishing and managing native warm season grasses. The second topic will be landowners with acreages of under 100, 400, and 900 acres sharing their experiences with programs such as Master Tree Farmer to move their land management activities to a higher level. Landowners will see some of the possibilities for the management of their property.
