Leisure Skills - Contra Dance
Introduction to a social dance that has been defined as “real people in real time with real music – real life.” Students experience and contribute to the communality among dancers and live musicians that characterizes this social dance form that is rooted in English country and square dances and that enjoys subculture popularity throughout North America. Students gain an appreciation of dance as applied art and as community adhesive. They participate in the evolution of a traditional art form into a contemporary one.
Instructor Info:
Jennie Wakefield has been an avid contra dancer for 14 years. She also teaches in the English department at Clemson.
Contra Dance musicians: David White (fiddle, banjo) and Roger Gold (guitar, foot percussion), both of Asheville, play contra dances throughout the area.
