Example Course Description/Objectives (Intermediate Swing)

A course designed to give students an understanding of the history of Swing and its close relationship to Carolina Shag. Recognize the importance of a dance “Style” in relation to choice in music. Dancing as a leisure pursuit. Dances may include Carolina Shag, Jitterbug, Charleston, Lindy Hop and moves including dips, tricks and aerials.

Focus will be on learning a “Performance” routine, having fun, polishing your style and Synchronized team dancing.

Course Objectives

  1. Have a better understanding of the importance of leisure, and the role of dance.
  2. Develop an understanding of how important dance style is to music.
  3. Demonstrate dance routines from dances studied.
  4. Learn to appreciate and enjoy the value of dance in both social and cultural settings.

Intro to Swing Dance Class Description

Introduction to vintage swing dances created in the 1920-1950's

Including Charleston, Lindy Hop, Jitterbug, Shag and optional acrobatic moves used in performance and competition. Develop lead & follow skills necessary to dance at social events.

Intermediate Swing Dance Class Description

You will work on improving your ability to improvise, add style, musicality and many additional moves to you dance vocabulary. Each semester we will cover a different routine that will include 20-30 moves from dances including Charleston, Lindy, Jitterbug, Shag & optional acrobatic moves.

Advanced Swing Dance Class Description

Learn a competition level performance routine and demonstrate. You will learn and demonstrate breaking down the dance to teach a group of beginners how to dance basic swing steps. You will learn the reverse Lead & Follow roll in order to teach a basic Swing moves class without a partner. You will also create moves of your own and choreograph a short routine.
