Singing in a vocal ensemble provides students opportunities to enhance music skills, build vocal ability, enjoy wonderful performance opportunities, and make lifelong friendships. Clemson Choirs offers six different vocal ensembles, with performances ranging from masterworks for combined choirs and orchestra in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts to intimate chamber music or exhilarating a cappella pop shows at multiple on- and off-campus venues.
For singers wanting to go beyond the traditional choral experience, there are three small, auditioned, vocal ensembles, each comprised of 12-16 singers also enrolled in one of the traditional choirs listed above.
Clemson University Singers, Men’s Glee, and Women’s Glee
CU Singers (MUSIC 370) is a small, auditioned, mixed choir of approximately 42 voices. Auditions will take place on Monday (8/17) and Tues. (8/18) from 1:00-4:30 p.m. and Wed. (8/19) by appointment in the office of the Director of Choral Activities (119 Brooks Center). The audition will consist of singing “America the Beautiful” and some short vocal exercises. Interested students should email Misty Soles to schedule a 10 min. audition time.
Men’s Glee (MUSIC 372) and Women’s Glee (MUSIC 371) are non-auditioned ensembles that simply require students to register for the appropriate course and attend the first rehearsal, Thursday, August 20 at 12:30 for Men’s Glee and 3:30 for Women’s Glee.
Viva Voce
Viva Voce (MUSIC 344) is an elite, mixed ensemble of approximately 16 students singing traditional literature from a wide array of genres, styles, and time periods. Membership is through audition and requires participation in Men’s Glee, Women’s Glee, or, preferably, CU Singers. Interested students should register for the course and attend the first rehearsal, Monday, August 24, at 4:00. They should also prepare a solo piece that will demonstrate musical maturity and healthy vocal production. Individual auditions will begin on Thursday and will continue through the end of the week.
Tigeroar and TakeNote
Tigeroar (male, MUSIC 341) and TakeNote (female, MUSIC 342) are small, a cappella ensembles comprised of approximately 16 students and focusing primarily on popular music. Membership is through audition and requires participation in Men’s Glee, Women’s Glee, or CU Singers. Initial auditions for TakeNote will be on Monday, August 24, beginning at 6:30 in 117 Brooks. For Tigeroar, auditions will be on Tuesday, August 25, beginning at 5:00 in 117 Brooks. For the initial audition, students should complete an application and prepare a brief solo passage from a familiar pop piece. The solo, to be sung a cappella, should demonstrate musicality, tone quality, and stage presence. Call-back auditions will follow. Applications will be available at the first rehearsals of CU Singers, Men’s Glee, and Women’s Glee.
Whether a seasoned singer or a choral newcomer, Clemson Choirs has a place for you.
