The carillon originated in Belgium and the Netherlands during the 15th century when people wanted not only to make beautiful bells, but also to produce wonderful sounds. In the 17th century, Francois and Pieter Hemony perfected the art of bell making and tuning so that the bells could be sounded together to produce harmonies. Although the world's greatest concentration of carillons is still found in Europe, the art of the carillon has spread worldwide, with instruments on every continent except Antarctica. There are more than 200 carillons in North America. The Clemson University Memorial Carillon is the only one in the Upstate of South Carolina
