Audio Engineering at Clemson

The Audio Engineering Emphasis program area in Production Studies in Performing Arts major allows students to focus on recording techniques, live sound reinforcement, and music technology. Coupled with the core Production Studies curriculum, the Audio Engineering sequence prepares students for a wide variety of career choices in music technology.

The Clemson University Music Technology Lab has 12 student workstations with Music XPC computers and Korg N5 synthesizer/keyboards. Software in the lab includes Sonar for MIDI sequencing and audio recording, and Finale for music notation. Each workstation is has a CD-R DVD drive. The master workstation is equipped with networking software as well as the ability to handle all types of recording media, including CD-R, DAT,cassette, and LP. The lab also has Alesis Nanosynths and keyboards by Kurzweil and Yamaha.

The Clemson University Recording Studio features a Macintosh Dual-Processor computer running Digidesign's ProTools HD3 hard disk recording system. The control room is equpped with mutliple external hard drives, providing more than 700 gigabytes of storage for audio files. The recording mixing console is a Focusrite Control 24 that provides 16 simultaneous imputs. Two 17-inch flat-screen monitors allow viewing of the ProTools mix and edit windows. An Alesis Masterlink high-resolution CD recorder is connected to the system for CD mastering and burning, as well as a Sony PCM-R500 DAT recorder. The recording studio has Apple's Super Drive that is capable of reading and burning CDs and DVDs.

Numerous professional quality microphones are available including models from Audio Technica, Neumann, AKG, Earthworks, Sennheiser, Electro-Voice, Shure, Audix and Soundfield.

The control room is wired to two adjoining recording rooms, offering flexibility in acoustics and space. There is also a 16-channel digital link from the Brooks Center's mainstage to the control room that allows the recording of live concerts and recording sessions.
