Voice for the Stage

Voice for the Stage introduces students to the importance of voice training to the total training of the actor, and to anyone interested in improving their communication skills. Students explore the voice in the context of human communication; the course provides a progression of exercises to free, develop and strengthen the voice as both a human instrument and actor’s instrument. Voice classes focus on relaxation, breath, sound, vibrations, self-expression, range, power, truthfulness, the body-voice connection and the International Phonetic Alphabet. Students explore the sounds of our language and learn the symbols that represent each sound, including how to address regional dialects. Voice class aims to increase the student’s self-awareness and expand their sound vocabulary and range of choices when approaching text and performing. They engage in autobiographical storytelling and ensemble projects, and explore heightened text using poetry and Shakespeare.
