The Clemson University football team isn’t the only team getting ready for an exciting and challenging football season. The Tiger Band is also gearing up.
Over the next few weeks, members of the band will audition, rehearse, and march in the evening sun as they prepare for the 2008 football season.
“This is a very busy time for the students and the band staff,” said Mark Spede, director of bands at Clemson. “There’s lots of work that goes into preparing for football season, including organizing music, sorting uniforms, and maintaining and tuning various instruments.”
The band’s pre-season camp, which began August 12 and continues until the first game, has members learning a new halftime show, the pre-game program, cheers and stand tunes. “The band must perfect nearly 30 pieces of music before the opening game,” said Paul Buyer, the band’s percussion instructor.
In addition, the pre-season schedule includes several team-building exercises, a freshman orientation, as well as uniform fittings. But it’s not all work. There are plenty of opportunities for socializing and getting to know each other.
The band will work numerous hours making its 2008 national debut, which takes place on Saturday, Aug.30. The nationally televised game pits the Clemson Tigers against the University of Alabama Crimson Tide in Atlanta’s Georgia Dome, and will serve as a national stage for band to shine.
