Music Ensembles

Clemson University Jazz Ensemble

All students interested in auditioning for the Jazz Ensemble (MUSIC 363) should plan to attend and play at the first class meeting of the semester, Thursday, August 20 at 2:00 p.m.; audition sign-ups will be available following the rehearsal. Horn auditions are based on preparing an assigned chart, tone quality, technique, time, style, improvisation (optional), instrumentation, experience, attitude, and work ethic. Rhythm section auditions are based on playing the assigned chart with the band, how you play time, how you work within the rhythm section, how you accompany soloists, how you solo, groove/feel, attitude, and work ethic. Clemson University Jazz Combos

All students will be placed in a jazz combo (MUSIC 330) based on their ability and background. All instrumentalists and vocalists are welcome. Students will be placed according to improvisation, style, technique, and sight-reading. Combo sizes and times will be set based on enrollment and student schedules. All students must plan to attend and play at the first class. This course offers students an opportunity to learn how to improvise, study the great American songbook, study the styles and techniques of the great jazz artists, and preparation to perform in jazz and commercial music settings. Clemson University Symphonic Band

Please prepare two short excerpts demonstrating your lyrical and technical playing. Audition sign-ups for Symphonic Band (MUSIC 362) will be available outside the band office (119 Brooks) during the first week of classes. Clemson University Tiger Band

Tiger Band (MUSIC 361) auditions (for wind players) are for part and seating placement only. Please make sure you are registered in our database by either returning the tear-off card from our brochure, or by calling 864-656-3380. Also visit our web site: www.clemson.edu/tigerband for more information and to download music. Pre-season auditions are on Wednesday, August 12 (drumline is Tuesday, August 11...see below). You will be able to move into your university housing the day of your audition.

Clemson Tiger Band Drumline

Auditions for the Clemson Drumline (MUSIC 330) will be held on Tuesday, August 11th from 10:00am-3:30pm. Instrument assignments will be based on exercises, cadences, and music from the 2009 drumline packet in addition to sight-reading. Auditions will be judged on preparation, technique, timing, rhythmic accuracy, ensemble playing, memorization, and sound quality. Clemson University Symphony Orchestra

Orchestra (MUSIC 369) auditions for seating, scholarships and the Clemson University String Quartet will be held August 26-28. All interested students should bring their instruments to the first rehearsal on Thursday, August 20, at which time short excerpts will be distributed. Auditions will include excerpts and a selection of the musician's choice. Auditions are five minutes long and can be scheduled with conductor Dr. Levin.
