Dr. Richard E. Goodstein is chair of the Department of Performing Arts and director of the Symphonic Band. During his tenure, he has also directed the Clemson University Jazz Ensemble and the Tiger Marching Band. Additionally, he has taught Music Appreciation, Applied Clarinet, Bassoon, Saxophone and Improvisation, and he has developed courses in jazz and rock history. Goodstein served as musical director of the prestigious All-American College Band at Walt Disney World from 1987 to 1997. His professional conducting credits include performances with Nell Carter, Carol Channing, Marvin Hamlisch, Bob Hope, Carol Lawrence, Hal Linden, Bob Mintzer, Rita Moreno, Arturo Sandoval, Allen Vizzutti and Joe Williams. An active marching and concert band clinician and adjudicator, Goodstein has judged bands and orchestras throughout the United States. He is a senior member of the Heritage Music Festival staff, adjudicating festivals in London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, New York and Orlando. He served as orchestra conductor for the United Way Centennial Salute at the Kennedy Center and as band director at the Special Olympics 25th Anniversary Celebration, the United Way Centennial Celebration at the Rose Bowl Parade and the Statue of Liberty Centennial Celebrations. He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, College Band Directors National Association and International Association of Jazz Educators. Goodstein is a past president of the Atlantic Coast Conference Band Directors Association. He received a Doctor of Philosophy with emphasis in music education and conducting from Arizona State University. His other degrees include a Master of Music in music education from Arizona State and a Bachelor of Music in music education from Miami University at Ohio.
