Dr. Mark Hosler
Dr. Mark Hosler is an associate professor of music in the Department of Performing Arts. He was appointed to the Clemson faculty in 1992 as Marching Band Director/Assistant Director of Bands, a position he held for ten years. During his tenure at Clemson, he has conducted Tiger Band, the Concert Band, the Men's & Women's Basketball Pep Bands, the Jazz Ensemble, and the Symphonic Band; and taught music appreciation courses.
A native of Derby, Ohio, he received all of his degrees from The Ohio State University - a Bachelors Degree in Music Education in 1976, a Masters degree in 1985, and a Ph.D. in 1992.
Prior to joining the band staff at Clemson, Dr. Hosler served as an Assistant Director of The Ohio State University Marching Band for three years. During this time he also was a graduate teaching associate in the band performance and music education divisions of the OSU School of Music. His doctoral dissertation was a survey/historical document, The Brass Band Movement in North America: A Survey of Brass Bands in the United States and Canada. Prior to his work at OSU, Dr. Hosler served as Director of Bands at Westfall High School in Williamsport, Ohio, for ten years and Director of Bands at Westland High School in Galloway, Ohio, for three years where his bands consistently received critical acclaim throughout the state for their outstanding performances.
Dr. Hosler presently teaches music history and appreciation classes with primary expertise in American music history. Dr. Hosler's specific interest area lies in the roots and evolution of country music. A research sabbatical in 2002 resulted in the creation of a new course, History of Country Music.
Dr. Hosler has authored radio shows focusing on country music history for the public radio news magazine show Your Day, and appeared as a marching and concert band clinician and adjudicator. He serves as a new music reviewer for The Instrumentalist magazine, and has published articles in The Brass Band Bridge and The Instrumentalist. During his tenure as Director of Tiger Band, the band released three compact discs - Eye Of The Tiger, Tiger Rag! and Shakin' The Southland.
He is a member of the College Band Directors National Association, the Music Educator's National Conference, the South Carolina Music Education Association, and numerous other professional associations.
