Dr. Christopher Wayne Mathews is the Director of Choral Activities and an Assistant Professor of Music in the Department of Performing Arts. He conducts the Clemson University Singers as well as the Women's and Men's Glees. He also directs the newly formed Chamber Singers and Clemson's two a cappella pop ensembles, Tigeroar and TakeNote. In addition, Dr. Mathews is the coordinator of Music Theory at Clemson, teaching both Written Theory and Aural Skills.
Dr. Mathews earned the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting in 2004 from the University of Kentucky, where he was the assistant conductor of the UK Choristers, UK Chorale, and UK Men's Chorus. While at the University of Kentucky, he had the distinct honor of conducting the UK Chorale in performances at Carnegie Hall and the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Additionally, Dr. Mathews served as an instructor of music theory at the University of Kentucky, where he earned the Graduate Certificate in Music Theory Pedagogy.
Dr. Mathews graduated from Southwest Missouri State University in 1999 with a Master of Music degree in choral conducting. While there, he was the assistant conductor of the SMSU Collegiate Chorale and the conductor of the SMSU Chamber Singers. He earned a bachelor of Music degree in sacred music, focusing on piano and organ, from Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. As an undergraduate student, he was awarded the Academic excellence Medal in sacred Music and was inducted into the Alpha Chi Honor Society. He graduated summa cum laude in 1991.
Dr. Mathews has frequently served as adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor and has given presentations at regional conferences of both the American Choral Directors Association and the College Music Society. Prior to his appointment at Clemson University, Dr. Mathews worked for more than 12 years on church staffs in Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. He is currently the Minister of Music at Cross Roads Baptist Church in Easley, South Carolina.
