Premiered At Washington's Charter Theatre
“37 Stones,” or “The man Who Was A Quarry,” an original play by Clemson University resident playwright Mark Charney was recently premiered at the Charter Theatre in Washington D.C.
“37 Stones” centers around a man who, at the age of 44, has survived a total of 38 excruciating problems. Thirty-seven of them were his recurring kidney stones, which he has experienced since his teenage years. The 38th was the recurring presence of his intrusive, overprotective mother.
Charter Theatre’s artistic director Keith Bridges said, “What struck me about this play was how it honestly and humorously chisels out the emotional quarry that is this man’s life, revealing both the psychological and physical scars the stones and his mother have left on him and his extended family.”
Since it’s founding in 1998, Charter Theatre has produced 21 new plays—an average of three each year—winning two Helen Hayes Awards for acting, one for writing, and earning 21 nominations.
The comedy is the first in a trilogy Charney is writing on male dysfunction. The second “Double Hernia,” has had an off Broadway reading at American Place Theatre and at Charter Theatre. The third, “Auto Immunity” is presently being completed. The script for “37 Stones” won the 2004 New Play Festival at Centre Stage-South Carolina.
Charney is the director of theatre in the Department of Performing Arts at Clemson University and serves as the vice chair of playwriting in Region IV of the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival. He is also the co-artistic director of WordBRIDGE, a playwriting workshop for young playwrights and a member of the non-profit theatre company Generous Company.
