Equipment Footlockers |
SC LIFE has developed 8 equipment footlockers, each containing: a laptop computer with CD burner and software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Photoshop 7.0, etc.), plant press with plant collection equipment, insect collection equipment (sweep net, beat sheet, kill jars, insect pins, spreading board, pinning blocks, an insect clamp, kick net, and sorting pan) a collection of mammal skulls (beaver, muskrat, tree squirrel, striped skunk, opossum, bat, gray fox, raccoon, mink, bobcat, jackrabbit, and mouse), EcoLogger Kit (an environmental datalogger , DigiScope (a digital stereoscope), digital camera (with ACDSee software), digital video recorder (with MovieMaker software), temperature probe, pH meter, waterproof pH and temperature probe, infrared temperature probe, thermo-hygrometer, a wind gauge, electronic stop watch, bat sonar detector, tape measure, electronic scale, soil auger, electronic caliper, GPS unit (with mapping software), flashlight, LaMotte water quality test kit (tests for dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, coliform bacteria, pH, temperature, and turbidity), flagging, and a teacher’s notebook. In order for a teacher to be eligible to borrow a footlocker, he/she must take a summer graduate course offered through Clemson University that will teach them how to use the equipment. SC LIFE lesson plans have also been developed that use the contents of the footlocker and can be downloaded as pdf files.
Once the course is complete, footlockers are available for teachers to borrow and use in their classrooms, however, because of the demand for the footlockers, there is a time limit. Teachers may chose one of the two time sessions offered (Session I: September through December or Session II: January through May). The footlockers will also be available on a first come, first serve basis, so make your reservations early. SC LIFE staff will both deliver and pick up the footlockers. Instruction manuals for the footlocker equipment can be downloaded below as pdf files.
