New Abbeville County Ag Building
| Name | cp chihasz | | Situation | Since the last county fair in 1979, we have held our Abbeville County youth livestock show outdoors at various locations around the county. this event has continued to grow even without a permanent covered facility. At the county Extension office, meeting facilities were becoming hard to schedule due to increased county government offices in the building. This was becoming frustrating not only to county Extension staff, but to clientel. | | Response | Over 150 cattlemen, forest landowners, 4-H members and families attended a county council meeting to voice their concerns. It was brought out that ag accounted for over $30 million in Abbeville County, more than any other industry. | | Impact | Through the efforts of the Extension advocacy committee, county cattlemen's and forestry landowner's association and 4-H members and families, we now have a new ag building with a 14,500 square feet covered show arena and 4,800 square feet of office space for the Clemson Extension offices. The cattlemen and county Farm Bureau contributed over $5,000 to get the show arena ready for our first covered show in 27 years. 84 4-Hers brought 168 head of beef and dairy calves from nine counties to the show. We also have first-rate meeting facilities for the
agricultural interests in Abbeville County. |
