Sporting Clays Fun Shoot
| Name | cp chihasz | | Situation | The 4-H Shooting Sports program has been a big part of the 4-H program in Abbeville County for several years. While the program has been successful, there needed to be a "next step" to let youth practice skills that they had learned. | | Response | The 4-H Shooting Sports program teaches young people safe gun handling, leadership skills, and much more. In Abbeville County, we are fortunate to have a sporting clays course here in the county and we contacted them to attempt to get their involvement in club activities and the possibility of using the club for tournament-type events. They were eager to cooperate with us. We use the club for our shotgun meetings.
As a way to let allow youth to practice shooting and gun handling skills
that they had learned, a sporting clays fun shoot was scheduled and the whole state was invited. The Abbeville County 4-H Shooting Sports, along with Rocky Knoll Sporting Clays, in cooperation with the state 4-H
natural resources coordinator, held a fun shoot for all SC 4-H shooting sports members. We had 42 4-Hers and their families from nine counties across South Carolina to participate. Parents and local club members served as group leaders, scorers and servers for a BBQ dinner. | | Impact | Two club members are now certified 4-H shotgun instructors. The state shooting sports program made over $300 from a "hardest target" competition. But more than anything everybody had a fun, educational and safe day on one of the best sporting clays courses around. Folks wanted to know and we do plan to make this an annual event. |
