What an honor it is to serve as the 2016-2017 Chair of the Board of Visitors for Clemson University. Over the years, many people have asked about the role of the Board of Visitors. The approximately 60 members are nominated by the University Board of Trustees. We serve as goodwill ambassadors of Clemson University and are charged to learn as much about the University to communicate pertinent and accurate information about Clemson to family, friends, colleagues and members of the public. The Board also assists President Clements with any special projects or assignments when he asks.
Each member of the Board serves on one of various committees. One promotes goodwill by assisting with student engagement. One works on student recruitment and another serves as legislative advocates with our state and federal legislators. Each of these touch the University in various ways.
We recognize an extraordinary staff member in the University system annually through our Marvin G. Carmichael Service Award. The Board of Visitors spouses group initiated the Grace Clements Scholarship for the Clemson LIFE program. This program is designed for students with intellectual disabilities who desire a postsecondary experience on a college campus.
Clemson continues to reach new heights each year. The University just completed its “Will to Lead Campaign” in which raised in excess of one billion dollars for the University. There is more to do and the Board of Visitors is there to do its part.
As a 1974 (BA) and 1977 (MA) graduate of the College of Architecture, the education I received has allowed me to develop as a complete person and I am privileged to be able to give back to my University. The Board of Visitors work diligently to support the University, and are most proud to be a part of the Clemson family and to support our students, faculty, staff and state!
