Environmental ConservationWatershed management, timber production, forest management, forest management, wildlife management, water quality issues and more. Research efforts in agricultural production include studies to decrease environmental impact from chemicals and manure, while maintaining economically viable operations. The
scientists are also investigating environmentally sound methods to control
fire ants using biological methods, such as natural predators, as well
as bait technology. In
addition, the scientists are studying forest regeneration, growth patterns
of wetland forest trees, impacts of rain and drought cycles on the water
table, and groundwater pollution movement, as well as wildlife ecology.
Their
work is being expanded to include environmental toxicology, wastewater
treatment, and landscape ecology to preserve the state's fragile coastal
ecosystems as commercial development continues. In
other studies, scientists are analyzing the ways that housing developments,
golf courses, agriculture, and urban development can cause movement of
fertilizers, pesticides, and other contaminants into surface and ground
waters. They are also investigating the use of natural and man-made wetlands
to remove and process these contaminants before they enter the state's
waterways. Other scientists are studying the effects that chemicals in the environment may have on the immune and reproductive systems of both animals and humans.
