Developing rural economies

economic developmentClemson applied economists have formed the Regional Economic Development Research Laboratory to coordinate and disseminate research findings on this issue.

Through the laboratory, they are developing a fiscal and economic impact model to help local governments, state agencies, and the private sector understand the impact of public policy initiatives on economic development.

They are also investigating the impact that economic development in urban areas has on surrounding rural communities. And they are examining the potential to stimulate employment growth in urban and rural counties by targeting industrial recruitment efforts at "clusters" of companies in similar industries. Other research is analyzing the effectiveness of public and private venture capital programs in meeting the equity needs of start-up businesses.

Another study is investigating the unique barriers that former welfare recipients face in the welfare-to-work movement, such as lack of public transportation or child care. The scientists are also analyzing the relationship between education, the quality of public schools, and the rate of economic development in rural communities.
