Automating ornamental horticulture
The
closed system protects the cuttings from diseases and pests, allows water
and nutrients to be recycled, and eliminates the need for pesticides.
Computer-controlled water temperatures allow the cuttings to be planted
directly into the field or into containers for growing to saleable size. The
result is high quality, healthy plants that command premium prices and
are produced in a manner that is both environmentally sensitive and cost
effective. A
new company, called Southern Sun, has been formed to produce and market
the system of trays, transplants, and computerized greenhouse equipment.
