Perfuming poultry houses

poultryGarlic powder is being used to make poultry and hog farms better neighbors as urban populations expand into rural areas. The Clemson researchers are finding that the garlic works like a charm ... and may even lower the cholesterol in eggs and pork.

Garlic makes the farms smell like a pizzeria, which is more acceptable to the new neighbors than the smell of manure. The eggs and meat from garlic-fed animals have already passed consumer taste tests. Now, the scientists are analyzing cholesterol content. If the cholesterol levels are lower than those in traditional eggs and pork, the garlic-fed products may command a premium price because of the health benefits.

This is one of a variety of studies funded by the South Carolina General Assembly to improve livestock waste management. Requests for more information on this study are being received from livestock producers around the country.
