Developing new vegetable varieties

melonClemson is joining the U.S. Department of Agriculture to build new facilities for vegetable research in Charleston. Construction of offices and laboratories is planned for completion in spring 2002, with greenhouses scheduled as phase two of the project.

The two groups of scientists have collaborated for many years, developing more than 180 new varieties that have improved vegetable production for growers throughout the coastal South. Those varieties include Charleston Gray and Congo watermelon, Planter's Jumbo cantaloupe, Goldcoast snap bean, Homestead tomato, Wando pea, Charleston hot pepper, and Ranger squash.

In the past, however, the researchers were stationed in separate structures, some dating back to the 1930s. The new facilities will bring the two groups together, providing a better exchange of ideas and information, as well as state-of-the-art laboratory capabilities.
