Growing yields with agroecology

agroecologyIn an effort called "agroecology," Clemson scientists are investigating new crop production systems that increase grower profitability, enhance environmental conservation, improve pest management strategies, and utilize new genetic and mechanical technologies.

The new cropping systems - such as narrow-row planting, conservation tillage, deep tillage, and double-cropping - have dramatically increased yields in soybean and corn.

Now the researchers are studying the ecological and environmental benefits of these practices and examining their effects on soil and water quality, insect pests and beneficial insects. They are also developing new varieties of crop plants that are specifically adapted to the new production systems to further improve yields.
