PRESS ADVISORY
Clemson Hosts Discussion of Official Prayer at Government Meetings
What: In 2004 the U.S. Court of Appeals refused to uphold prayer at S.C. public meetings, yet the practice continues. In Wynne vs. Great Falls, S.C., the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in ruling for Wynne refused to uphold “prayers by legislative or other public bodies that explicitly invoke one religion in preference to others.” However, the issue is far from settled. The League of Women Voters of the Clemson Area and Strom Thurmond Institute are sponsoring a panel representing a range of views on the topic. A question and answer period will follow brief presentations by each of the forum participants. The free event is open to the public.
When: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Self Auditorium, Strom Thurmond Institute, Clemson University
Who: Participants are the Rev. Chris Heavner, campus pastor, University Lutheran Church, Clemson; the Rev. William Rinehart, Oconee County council member and pastor of the United Assembly of God, Seneca; Roger Rollin of the American Civil Liberties Union of South Carolina; Mayor Richard A. Shirley of Anderson; and Joseph Stewart, chairman of the department of political science at Clemson University. The moderator is Kathy L. Woodard, League of Women Voters board member and Clemson University employee.
