Technician Allocation

Decisions on the assignment of technicians to support research projects are made by the this office in consultation with the associate dean, department chair and faculty member during the design phase of the research project. This will normally take place during May-October each year.

The productivity of the faculty member's research program over the past five years shall be the primary factor in determining the assignment of technicians. Guidelines for productivity may include:

  • The faculty member must have an active CRIS project and must have reported his/her findings in a timely manner.

  • Evidence of leveraging of state recurring or competitive grant or commodity funds (e.g., turf, ornamentals, fire ant, soybean, cotton, tobacco, etc).

  • Evidence that generated funds were expended for purposes other than summer salary for the faculty member (e.g., graduate students, post docs, equipment, etc.)

  • The faculty member has had a greater than average number of refereed publications (or equivalent) for his/her program for the past five years.

  • A professor shall have averaged 100% of his/her annual salary plus fringe for each of the past five years in restricted, unrestricted, revenue and foundation accounts.

  • An associate professor shall have averaged 50% of his/her annual salary plus fringe for each of the past five years in restricted, unrestricted, revenue and foundation accounts.

  • An assistant professor shall have averaged 25% of his/her annual salary for each of the past five years in restricted, unrestricted, revenue and foundation accounts.

  • The faculty member may petition this office and indicate that a contract within the past five years so designates a technician or that the services performed by the technician are of benefit to the state and as such, cannot be measured against the above productivity factors.

Technicians or portions of a technician's time will be assigned for a period of five years to conform with the running dates of approved projects. At the end of the project, the technician will be subject to reassignment by this office.

The faculty member may elect to fund the position from generated funds as follows:

  • A professor would have to fund 100% plus fringe
  • An associate professor would have to fund 50% plus fringe
  • An assistant professor would have to fund 25% plus fringe.

Funds from the faculty member would have to be forthcoming from a confirmed source to cover all expenses for the entire year before this alternative is approved.

The final decision rests with this office. The same guidelines may also be used to transfer a technician from a faculty member to a higher priority area or to fulfill a contractual obligation relative to a technician.

The salaries of  technicians who retire or resign will be returned to this office. Decisions to refill vacant technician positions will be made by this office in consultation with the appropriate associate dean and department chairs, based on the criteria outlined above.
