Making Good Decisions
| Name | Kristi H. Schlegel | | Situation | Practicing good decision making is an exercise that helps strengthen the critical thinking and reasoning skills of young people. Youth can practice making good decisions as a part of 4-H judging activities. Aiken County 4-H members have not been taking full advantage of 4-H judging activities. | | Response | The agent compiled a separate calendar of judging activities, practices, eventsand contests. This calendar contains a list of judging exercises planned in Aiken County, nearby counties, statewide activities sponsored by Clemson University Extension Serviice, and other contests available to 4-H members.
Youth involved in judging activities are encouraged to judge in more than one project area which increases the activities that are available, gives more practice, improves skills, and keeps judging acumen sharp through out the 4-H year. | | Impact | Impact of the push for increasing judging skills has led to a 4-H leader/volunteer with judging experience becoming the Aiken County 4-H
Judging Coach. This leader/volunteer can work with many project areas and teach decision making skills. A Judging Coach can be a good resource to 4-H members and parents in the areas of answering questions, giving reasons, offering judging techniques, and sharing insight on contests. A coach also provides a leader/volunteer who can give parents and youth up-to-date information and assistance. |
