Two Deans Appointed at Clemson
Two interim deans at Clemson University have had the "interim" removed from their titles, Provost Doris Helms announced Tuesday. Richard E. "Rick" Goodstein, who has been interim dean of the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities since June 2010, has been appointed to the position on a permanent basis after a national search. Thomas R. "Tom" Scott has been interim dean of the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences since July 2009. His appointment as dean follows a vote of confidence in his leadership by the faculty of the college.

Four Inducted into Academy of Engineers and Scientists
Four new members were inducted into the Thomas Green Clemson Academy of Engineers and Scientists. They are Terry Gettys, director of research and development for the Michelin Group; Walter Fleming Jones, the executive director of the Office of Naval Research in 2007; Jay Lathrop, professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering; John W. "Jack" Miley, an internationally-known polymer chemist and employee of Milliken & Co. Forty-eight engineers and scientists have been honored since 1995 for their contributions to the field.

Join Clemson Expedition to the Great Plains
July 9th-16th Patrick McMillan, naturalist, Clemson professor and host of ETV's "Expeditions with Patrick McMillan," will lead a group to discover the rarely seen wonders of Nebraska and South Dakota. He'll be joined by Clemson University curators Dave and Christian Cicimurri who will add their knowledge of the area's geology and fossil history. You can join the expedition to see a version of the Great Plains and Black Hills that you just can't get on your own - one that includes rare glimpses of endangered species, and opportunities to discover significant fossils.

Mears Receives National Award
Laine Mears, an assistant professor of automotive engineering, received the Ralph R. Teetor Award. This is the top educational award of the Society of Automotive Engineers and is presented annually by the professional association. He is the third professor at Clemson to receive this award since it was established in 1965.

Excellence Recognized in Wyman
David Wyman, interim director of the Arthur M. Spiro Institute for Entrepreneurial Leadership at Clemson, demands the best from his students and is recognized for his high expectations and hard work. Wyman was presented with the 2011 Excellence-in-Teaching Award by Clemson University Undergraduate Student Government.

When it Comes to Going Green, Clemson Goes for the Gold
Clemson had the highest recycling percentage in comparison to all colleges in South Carolina in 2011. From February 2 through April 2, Clemson recycled 31.95 percent of their waste. In the nationwide competition of 630 colleges and university, they also rank second behind the University of Maryland in the ACC.

Pickett Named Associate Dean
Greg Pickett has been appointed associate dean of Clemson at the Falls and the Greenville initiative for the College of Business and Behavioral Sciences at Clemson University. Pickett has been interim associate dean since March 2010. His new title becomes effective July 1.

However, a biopsychologist, June Pilcher, who studies the human brain in relation to consciousness and unconsciousness, claims that humans tend to overestimate their abilities in driving. She analyzes how the human brain can only operate on so many tasks before its attention is limited. This is most noticeable with multitasking while behind the wheel.

Graham to get Honorary Degree at Commencement
U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., will receive an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities at commencement exercises at Clemson University Friday, May 13, in Littlejohn Coliseum.

Student Service Project Wins Top Award
A project to bring fresh water to the people of the earthquake-ravaged nation of Haiti has earned a top service award for a team of engineering students from Clemson University.
The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education presented Clemson Engineers for Developing Countries its Service Learning Project of the Year award.

Junior Dramaturg's Work Shines
Susanne Parker, a junior from Spartanburg, is the winner of the 2011 Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival's Literary Managers and Dramaturg of the Americas Dramaturgy Award for her work on "These Shining Lives." Dramaturgs work in collaboration with playwrights and directors to bring historical, social, political and cultural expertise to the production. From their analysis of the text, dramaturges advise directors, cast members and the technical crew to specific conditions mentioned within the play.

Clemson Introduces Economic Development Team
Clemson University has named a new team to spearhead its economic development efforts under the leadership of Vice President John Kelly. "The combined team will promote public-private partnerships that capitalize on the university's expertise as a land-grant institution," Kelly said. "It will build on Clemson's established research and education programs in agriculture, forestry, natural resources, life sciences and engineering."

Kirk Hawkins, a mechanical engineering alumnus, is now the CEO of ICON Aircraft, and his company is launching a campaign to raise awareness of the accessibility of sport flying. ICON Aircraft presents aircraft technology that gives people the opportunity to engage in recreationally flying an aircraft. Check out the video below for more information.

The Clemson Fund is to proud to announce and thank Seniors for making their donation to the Class of 2011 Senior Class Project, a donation to the All-Faiths Chapel and Student Memorial Garden, at both Rub the Rock and Senior Picnic. An Anonymous Donation Warms the Hearts of Many
A Lee Hall seminar room will be named in memory of Deborah K. McNair, a 1989 Clemson graduate, who passed away suddenly last year. Her family is pleased to hear that McNair will be remembered in this way because the university meant a good deal to her. The naming is contributed to an anonymous donation of $50,000 which is now part of Clemson's The Will to Lead capital campaign.

Alumna Lands Role of Leading Lady
You may have seen Clemson graduate Sandra VanNatta in movies like "The Notebook" and "Leatherheads" alongside acting greats such as George Clooney and Renee Zellweger, but now the upstate native has her first starring role successfully under her belt. VanNatta stars in "The Shunning"-a Hallmark movie based on the first novel of the best-selling "The Heritage of Lancaster County" book series from author Beverly Lewis.

NPR Features Ph.D. Alumnus
Atkins Scientist and Practice Manager, Dr. Scott Zengel, was featured in a National Public Radio (NPR) segment on April 20, 2011, the one-year anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon well blowout and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Jeff Duncan Visits DC/Baltimore Club
Members of the Board of Directors of the DC/Baltiomre Club had breakfast recently with alumnus and US Congressman Jeff Duncan '88 (SC-3). The meeting was hosted by Allen Martin at his office, The Livingston Group, in DC. Congressman Duncan spoke about his days as a football player and then how he got started in public office.

Prater Named Master Teacher
Clemson University students have chosen Mary Ann Prater as the Alumni Master Teacher for 2011. Prater is a senior lecturer in Clemson's School of Accountancy and Finance in the College of Business and Behavioral Science. The Alumni Master Teacher Award for outstanding undergraduate classroom instruction is presented to a faculty member nominated by the student body and selected by the Student Alumni Council.

Golf Alumni, Glover and Byrd, Battle in Playoff
Former Clemson teammates Lucas Glover and Jonathan Byrd painted the place orange Sunday, May 8th, after coming within a stroke of being paired in the final group, then exchanging the lead before they wound up locked together at 15-under after 72 holes to a force a playoff in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. Glover, the U.S. Open winner in 2009 who had gone winless in 42 events since, made a tricky seven-foot putt to get to 15-under and then told a broadcast interviewer he expected Byrd to birdie 18 and force a playoff, which is exactly what happened.

Spring Ring Ceremony
138 students received their Clemson rings at the Spring Ring Ceremony which was held Monday, April 11th at the Owen Pavilion. Any student who has earned 90 credit hours at Clemson is eligible to participate in the ceremony sponsored by the Alumni Association. The Fall Ring Ceremony is scheduled for September 29th.
