Clemson Drives Towards Excellence

Created by the S.C. Legislature and funded through S.C. Education Lottery proceeds, the S.C. Centers of Economic Excellence (CoEE) Program has advanced the state's knowledge-based economy and created jobs and economic opportunities for South Carolinians since 2002. Even though the program has more than doubled its total investment of $180 million in lottery funds, the benefits are far more than financial.

The Clemson Alumni Association recognizes up to five alumni annually for outstanding service to Clemson University, success in their professions or personal callings, and commitment to the communities to which they belong. New Potato Proves to be Highly Resistant

Scientists from Clemson University and the USDA Agricultural Research Service have developed a new variety of not-so-sweet potato, called Liberty. The Liberty potato is highly resistant to nematodes and moderately resistant to insect pests and fusarium wilt, a fungal disease. These potatoes are easy to grow, store, and incorporate into your next meal.

Groundbreaking Gift to Help Real Estate Students

Phil and Lauren Hughes have established the Hughes ULI Student Fellowship Award that will pay membership fees for all the students to join the Urban Land Institute. A second fund for the Hughes Distinguished Student Award will recognize two outstanding graduates with $500 cash awards annually. The amazing $25,000 gift is a part of Clemson's "The Will to Lead" capital campaign.

Student Sculpture Gains International Recognition

Clemson University master of fine arts student Thomas Schram has been recognized by the International Sculpture Center with a 2011 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. Schram's work was selected from a pool of 485 students representing more than 190 colleges and universities around the world.

Clemson University and The University of Queensland, Australia, jointly will pursue means of public and private funding to advance biofuel research and commercialization, and further development and commercialization in ethanol and biodiesel production. The partnership between these leading research universities will foster strategies to support energy independence, economic development, fuel production and agricultural revenues in South Carolina and Queensland.

This partnership enables Casio to further organize its nationwide professional development program for math teachers. Blood that Runs Orange

Of the more than 120,000 Clemson alumni across the country, 10 are from the same family. The legacy began with Earl K. Rigler Jr., who graduated Clemson in 1971. Tyler C. Rigler is the latest tiger in the family, but the Riglers don't plan to discontinue this tradition any time soon.

Reel Evokes an Earlier Clemson

Historian and professor emeritus Jerome Reel has always been the go-to guy for information about Clemson University, its customs and its origins. Now, Reel has shaped his wealth of information into "The High Seminary: A History of the Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina, Volume I, 1889-1964". "The High Seminary" looks at the changing social, cultural, economic and political climates between 1889 and 1964 and how the changes affected the University. The stories are historic, beneficial, at times humorous and, most importantly, demonstrate the determined spirit of the early university leaders.

Beloved Surgeon Receives The Order of the Palmetto

Newberry County Memorial Hospital (NCMH) celebrated Dr. John Brown's youthful enthusiasm and his first 50 years of pioneering and compassionate service as a general surgeon with a reception in Newberry on Monday, June 20, 2011. Among the many accolades bestowed on Dr. Brown was South Carolina's highest honor, the Order of the Palmetto. Known as the "Ever-Ready Surgeon," Dr. Brown has provided an exceptional level of surgical care in a rural health setting since 1998. He currently serves the patients at the Free Medical Clinic of Newberry County, and in 2010 he extended his compassionate free medical care outside the country, serving with a local medical team in Haiti after the earthquake.

Foundation Announces Board of Directors

Seven new members have been elected to the Clemson University Foundation board of directors. The board also re-elected its chairwoman and vice chairman. Jane S. Sosebee of Clemson was re-elected chairwoman, and G. Graham "Goz" Segars Jr. of Hartsville was re-elected vice chairman. The new members are Susie C. Adams, James H. Barnes, Robert B. Hambright, R. Glenn Hilliard, Stephen Hutchinson, Cheri Marie Phyfer and Ken Smith.
