Bridging the Gap between Science and Communication

Steven B. Katz, Clemson's Pearce Professor of Professional Communication, is finding ways to help students of science gain a better understanding of scientific communication within their own fields and within their communities. Katz has spent a major part of his career exploring the gap between knowing and saying, between thought and language, between content and style. Katz believes that scientific communication is central in the sciences, where publishing is still the primary basis for collaborating and sharing and thus, scientific progress. But he also believes that talking with the public is important for scientists, too. "Scientists have political and moral as well as economic reasons to communicate with general audiences," he said.

Hot on the Trail for Better Biofuels

When it comes to technology and science, many of us are like diners in a gourmet restaurant. We enjoy what's on our plates but are nearly clueless about the cooking the chefs do in the kitchen. One of the essential ingredients for technology is oil - and it is running out. We need to find substitutes. Otherwise the dishes on the technology menu are going to cost more and be far fewer than we need. Clemson researchers recognize this, and they're hot on the trail for potential solutions.

Alumni Association accepts Honorary Alumnus Nominations

Do you know someone who just "bleeds orange", is a tireless advocate and loyal supporter of Clemson University, but happened to receive their educational experience elsewhere? Or, have you ever been surprised to learn that someone who you always associate with Clemson, due to their "front-line" presence or "behind-the-scenes" efforts, is not a Clemson alumnus? If you answered yes to either question above, and have an individual in mind who - as a non-alum - works to promote Clemson's interests at every opportunity, consider nominating this person for "Honorary Alumnus" status within our Alumni Association.

Rink Chosen to Work on 9/11 Commemoration

Clemson alumnus Matt Rink was chosen along with another artist to transform aluminum pieces from the gothic arches of the World Trade Center towers into a sculpture to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. "I think we come at it from a humble perspective and with good intentions, trying to respect and honor the materials as much as we possibly can through the way that we actually work with them, which I think comes from trying to preserve as much of the surface detail as possible," said Rink. Rink received his Master of Fine Arts from Clemson May 2011.
