Homecoming 2011 Recap

We hope you enjoyed coming back to campus for Clemson’s recent Homecoming weekend. Over twelve alumni, college, group and department tailgates were held, Tigerama was a huge hit as always and the Clemson family enjoyed a 36 to 14 win over Boston College. Check out this fabulous video recap of the weekend’s festivities to bring back memories from this fun-filled weekend or to see what you missed. From the floats on Bowman, to Tigerama footage, to game highlights and halftime presentations, you’re sure to see something that reminds you of your time at Clemson.

Trustees Approve Plans for New Facilities and Programs

At its quarterly meeting last week, Clemson University’s board of trustees approved program plans for building a permanent home for the university’s architecture center in Charleston. The plans call for design and construction of an approximately 31,000-square-foot, three-story building at 292 Meeting St. in the heart of the city’s historic district.

Jerome Reel Honored with 2011 Governor’s Award in the Humanities

The Humanities CouncilSC presented a Governor’s Award in the Humanities to Clemson historian and professor emeritus Jerome “Jerry” Reel Wednesday in Columbia. Reel is being honored for a career that began at Clemson University in 1963. A Ph.D. in history from Emory University, he has touched the lives of hundreds of students and served Clemson as dean of undergraduate studies, senior vice provost and university historian.

TigersTeach Receive $1.2 Million to Recruit Teachers

Recognizing that South Carolina schools are in need of more qualified teachers, Clemson University educators are working to attract teachers from a previously untapped resource: Clemson students in engineering and science majors. The TigersTeach Noyce Scholarship Initiative will provide $10,000 scholarships to 30 undergraduate or graduate students from the science, technology, engineering or math – or STEM – disciplines to enroll in an undergraduate dual-degree program or enter the Master of Arts in Teaching program.

Kudzu Bug Pesters Soybeans

Clemson University entomologist Jeremy Greene and doctoral student Nick Seiter work with what are called “Kudzu bugs” in a 10 acre test field at Edisto Research & Education Center. As implied, these bugs voraciously feed on kudzu; however, the bugs also feed on soybeans, severally damaging farmers’ crops.

Researcher Awarded $50,000 by USDA

A Clemson horticulture researcher was awarded one of 29 USDA grants across 19 states to develop and share science-based tools to address the needs of America’s specialty crop industry. Sarah White, assistant professor and nursery extension specialist in the newly formed School of Agricultural, Forest and Environmental Sciences in the College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences, received $50,000 to direct a planning grant to develop industry-driven research priorities related to irrigation runoff handling, containment and remediation for ornamental crop production.

Intelligent River to Monitor Savannah River

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded $3 million to Clemson University to design, develop and deploy a basinwide network of computerized sensors to monitor water quality along the entire length of the Savannah River. “The Intelligent River research represents a ‘big idea’ worthy of Thomas Green Clemson, who founded our university to improve economic conditions through scientific research and education,” said Clemson President James F. Barker. A battery-operated computer smaller than a Rubik’s Cube is at the heart of the endeavor to deploy a network of environmental sensors along the 312-mile Savannah River — from the headwaters in North Carolina to the port in Savannah.

Rabon Promoted at Greenbax Enterprises

Sandra Rabon was named Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Greenbax Enterprises, Inc. (parent company of Piggly Wiggly Holdings, LLC and Piggly Wiggly Carolina Co., Inc.). She is a Charleston, South Carolina native, who earned a BS in Financial Management from Clemson University in 1985 and is a Certified Public Accountant. Rabon is married to a Clemson graduate and their eldest child is currently a freshman attending Clemson.

$1.5 Million Gift from Clemson Alumnus

A $1.5 million gift from Mitch and Carla Norville will be used in part to endow the Ernest R. Norville Endowed Chair in Biomedical Engineering. A portion of the gift, $250,000, will be used to help build a new basketball practice facility adjacent to Littlejohn Coliseum. "This enlightened investment will have a lasting legacy," said Clemson President James F. Barker. "The Norville Endowed Chair in Biomedical Engineering will improve medical care and help generations of undergraduate and graduate students at Clemson, and the addition to Littlejohn Coliseum will be a big boost for our team and will help our recruiting."

Clemson Alumni in Movie Credits

If you’ve seen an animated feature film in the last few years, chances are there’s a Clemson alumnus in the credits or at least behind the scenes. In fact, five Clemson digital artists were on the Rhythm & Hues team that won the 2008 Academy Award for Achievement in Visual Effects for The Golden Compass. They are the products of Clemson’s Digital Production Arts (DPA) graduate program and, of course, of their own talent and determination.

Calling All Air Rifle Alumni

The Clemson University Air Rifle Team has had a very successful past two years. As you may know, the team won the Inaugural National Championship in 2010 and continued on to repeat their win again in 2011. They were awarded a NSSF grant last year for $5,000 and another one for this school year. As they work hard to win a third consecutive National Championship title, they ask for your support and interest.

Sandhill REC Fall Festival - October

Join us for the 2nd Annual Clemson Sandhill Research and Education Center Fall Festival at 900 Clemson Road in northeast Columbia. The festival began on 10/2 and includes programs for school children Pre-K through 2nd grade every weekday morning. Roadside sales of pumpkins, gourds, straw, mums, scarecrows and more take place Tuesday through Saturday. The traditional evening festival itself will be held on Thursday through Saturday the last three weekends of the month from 6-10 PM with the first evening being this Thursday the 13th. During the last week of October, a carnival will also be on site. Funding garnered from this event goes to support the Sandhill property.

2012 will mark the 30th anniversary of Alumni Band. Homecoming 2012 will also mark the dedication of our Tiger Band Plaza at the Tiger Band practice field. CUTBA and Tiger Band are making a big push to field a 300-member Alumni Band for next year's homecoming. Join us for this historic and record-breaking event.
