New General Counsel Named

Clemson University has named an alumnus with 21 years of legal experience ranging from trial litigation to managing a university research foundation to be its new general counsel. W.C. "Chip" Hood, who currently serves as executive director and attorney for the Medical University of South Carolina Foundation for Research Development, will begin a new assignment as Clemson’s chief legal adviser in April. "Chip was selected after an excellent search process that drew outstanding candidates and involved input from the entire campus," said President James F. Barker.

New MBA Concentration in CBBS

Clemson University has introduced a new MBA concentration that is intentionally designed to encourage the creation and development of new businesses. An initiative of Clemson’s College of Business and Behavioral Science, the new one-year program will incorporate traditional finance, marketing, human resources and management knowledge with immersive, entrepreneurial-based coursework. “One of the primary goals of the MBA in Entrepreneurship and Innovation is to ensure that we incorporate a bias for creativity, experimentation and innovation,” said Associate Dean Greg Pickett.

Renovated Planetarium Launches into its Second Half-century

A matter of months after Alan Shepard piloted his Mercury capsule in a 15-minute suborbital flight to become the first American in space, Clemson University launched its own space program. It was space-age technology for its time. In its first 50 years, more than 100,000 visitors attended planetarium shows. Now the planetarium has reopened with 21st century components including high-definition projectors and a database of nearly a million celestial objects, all accompanied by surround sound audio.

The Watts Gift Clemson $5.5 Million

A family of Clemson alumni has given $5.5 million to Clemson University’s The Will to Lead capital campaign, the largest gift from an individual or family. The gift, from Charles Watt and his wife, Linda; son, Steve, and his wife, Pam; and son, Mike, and his wife, Kim, will transform student lives and the academic center of the university’s campus. The primary portion of the gift, $5.25 million, will establish The Watt Family Innovation Center for academic collaboration and student engagement.

Young Alumni Council Call for At-Large Members

The Young Alumni Council is seeking willing and determined volunteers to serve as at-large members. These members contribute to the overall success of the Council’s mission: to plan and implement programs and activities which will engage young alumni of Clemson University, to provide leadership and give counsel to the staff of the Alumni Association on matters of concern to young alumni and to provide guidance from a young alumni perspective to the Alumni Council. The YAC coordinates local events, events in Clemson, service opportunities for young alumni, and advocates the importance of giving back and remaining involved with your alma mater. Physics Professor Honored by American Physical Society

Terry M. Tritt, Alumni Distinguished Professor of Physics at Clemson University, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the scientific society's highest member honor. American Physical Society Fellows are elected by their peers for outstanding contributions to the field of physics. Fellowship is limited to no more than one half of 1 percent of the membership.
