Clemson, NASA Contest for Middle-schoolers Aims for Asteroids

Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to design a mission to an asteroid. Sound like an old episode of Mission Impossible? Not quite. This time, it’s NASA, Clemson University and other members of the NASA Human Health and Performance Center that are challenging students in the sixth through eighth grades to dream of going where no one has gone before. The contest is open to teams of one to four students who will submit a slide show presentation to NASA that outlines their plans for sending a human crew on a trip to an asteroid.

A new learning program has been developed for adults to earn a Clemson University MBA Leadership Certificate. The program focuses on the competency areas most requested by corporate partners. New Student, Academic and Athletic Facility Plans Approved

New Student, Academic and Athletic Facility Plans Approved

Clemson University trustees approved concept plans for several student life, academic and athletic facilities on campus at their winter quarterly meeting in Columbia. The trustees approved a plan to build a $123.5 million student housing, retail and activity hub at the east entrance to campus on the site of the former Douthit Hills housing development. Pending state approvals, construction on the project will begin in 2013 with a fall 2015 opening date.

Planning May Help Prevent “Spectator Rage”

Sports teams and stadium managers may be able to prevent spectator rage that leads to violence at sporting events by creating a comprehensive plan in advance, according to a study by researchers at Clemson and Stetson universities. They may be able to design ways to manage fan’s interactions to generate an “exhilarating, yet nonaggressive, customer experience,” according to the study, “Spectator Rage as the Dark Side of Engaging Sports Fans: Implications for Service Marketers” in the Feb. 3 edition of the Journal of Service Research.

Princeton Review Recognizes Clemson as a Best Value

Clemson University is one of the nation’s 75 best values in public colleges and universities, according to the “The Princeton Review Best Value Colleges for 2012,” announced Tuesday by The Princeton Review and USA TODAY. In its profile of Clemson on USA TODAY’s Web site, The Princeton Review editors stated that students “are especially bullish on the scholarships the university offers.” They quote a student as saying, "The value is unbeatable.”

Alumna to be Producer for CBS

Jenna Gibson, Clemson graduate ’06, was recently hired as a producer for Washington DC’s “CBS This Morning” team. Previously Gibson was the supervisor of Fox News’ Washington booking unit. Gibson was pivotal to the Royal Wedding coverage for Fox and will be important to CBS Washington’s coverage of the 2012 election.

Alumnus Wins Bronze Star

Spartanburg County native U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jason Pike received the Bronze Star Medal in January at a ceremony at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan. Pike, of Fingerville, was awarded for his “meritorious service in connection with combat operations” while serving as commander of a medical detachment in Afghanistan.

On Thursday, January 26, 2012 The College of Business and Behavioral Science held a reception in Greenville, SC hosted by Drew ’93 and Julie Brown ‘93 from the Clemson University Board of Visitors. The Young Alumni Council is seeking willing and determined volunteers to serve as at-large members. Clemson professor named American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow

Apparao Rao, a physics professor at Clemson University, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for his leading work in developing nanoscale materials. Play Golf like a Tiger!

For alumni who are 34 years old or younger, the University’s golf course, The Walker Course, offers a Young Alumni Associate Membership. This membership offers reduced initiation fees and monthly dues, but gives all of the same benefits of a full membership. Also, a portion of the initiation fee goes to the Clemson University Foundation, so ‘gift credit’ is given for the amount that is donated to the Foundation.
