Six Alumni To Receive Distinguished Service Award

The Clemson Alumni Association has announced six recipients of the Distinguished Service Award, the university’s highest alumni honor. The awards will be formally presented on March 30. The association annually recognizes alumni who demonstrate a dedication to enhancing the value of the university for future generations; church, professional and public service; and personal accomplishments that serve as a model for present and future Clemson students.

Clemson Charges towards a more Sustainable Future

The gentle whir of an electric motor — in a Chevy Volt, to be precise — marked the start of a new era for Clemson University on March 7. A single ceremony unveiled two new additions to the campus: Clemson's first electric vehicle charging station and a new car-sharing program for students, faculty and staff. The car-sharing program, called WeCar, is a membership-based, automated car rental program that allows Clemson students, faculty and staff to rent vehicles by the hour. And the car charging station located at the Hendrix Center will be available for free for privately owned electric vehicles.

Clemson Drives Workforce Development

From the Upstate to the coast, Clemson University is driving research and workforce development that will help keep the brightest students in South Carolina and boost the state’s economy. Speaking at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 2012 International Electric Vehicle Conference, John Kelly, vice president for economic development at Clemson, said Monday the university is investing in undergraduate studies and strengthening its track record of successful public-private partnerships. These initiatives will help provide jobs to keep students in the state after they graduate and establish South Carolina’s knowledge economy as one of the best in the nation.

Clemson Voices Heard at TEDx

TEDxClemsonU, an event for sharing innovative ideas, was held at Clemson University’s Strom Thurmond Institute at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4. Eleven Clemson students and faculty members spoke about topics ranging from mental health to science and engineering to the deaf community. Sponsored by the university’s Gantt Center for Student Life, TEDxClemsonU is a local, independently organized event licensed by TED, a non-profit organization devoted to “ideas worth spreading.” The theme of TEDxClemsonU was “The Voice You Are.”

Higher education leaders from across the country came to Clemson University on March 4-6 to learn from one another at the 10th National Conference on Best Practices in Achievement for Students of Color. Formerly known as the Best Practices in Black Student Achievement Conference, the title change reflects an expansion of the conference to include issues affecting all underrepresented students.

The Ever Loyal Circle, Clemson’s newest giving club encompasses a special group of alumni who have demonstrated their commitment to the University through consistent financial support. The Ever Loyal Circle recognizes alumni who provide financial support to Clemson, at any giving level, every year since graduation . We realize that life has taken you in many different directions since your college days and that family and career have kept you busy. If you‘ve missed making an annual gift to Clemson, it’s not too late to establish a perfectly consecutive giving record since your date of graduation. To “catch up” missed years, you need only to make a current fiscal-year gift plus a minimum gift of $10 for each missed year. Black Hole Unmasked

A study of X-rays emitted a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away has unmasked a stellar mass black hole in Andromeda, a spiral galaxy about 2.6 million light-years from Earth. Two Clemson University researchers joined an international team of astronomers, including scientists at Germany's Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, in publishing their findings in a pair of scientific journals this week.

Boyd Parr Named Livestock-Poultry Health Director

Boyd Parr has been named director of Clemson University Livestock-Poultry Health, which includes animal health programs, meat inspection and the state veterinary diagnostic center. “Boyd Parr is a highly respected veterinarian who has served South Carolina’s animal agriculture industry as a private practitioner and at Clemson Livestock-Poultry Health,” said John Kelly, Clemson vice president for economic development.

A professor at the Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR) will spend the next 12 months in Washington working for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. Thomas R. Kurfess, BMW Endowed Chair of Manufacturing at Clemson, was appointed assistant director for advanced manufacturing. His appointment began Feb. 21.

Ethics Bowl Team Continues Winning Tradition

Clemson University’s Ethics Bowl team placed second in the national Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl competition. Clemson’s team continued its winning tradition at the March 1 competition in Cincinnati by defeating opposing teams round after round to advance to the final round. The score for the championship round was unprecedented, with opponent Whitworth University winning by a single point.

Ring Ceremony Recap

Over 400 students and their families were on hand Monday, March 12th at Littlejohn Coliseum to participate in a ceremony celebrating the presentation of their official Clemson class ring. Guests enjoyed special guest speakers discussing the history and legacy of The Ring, a performance by TigerRoar, and presentation of rings by President Barker to each individual student. The event is held each Spring and Fall and is sponsored by the Student Alumni Association. More information on the Clemson Ring is available through the Clemson Alumni Association.
