Association Celebrates Distinguished Alumni

Over 300 guests were in attendance as The Clemson Alumni Association presented six alumni the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) at a March 30th Gala, sponsored by Nationwide, at The Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. The DSA is the university's highest alumni honor. The association annually recognizes alumni who demonstrate a dedication to: enhancing the value of the university for future generations; professional and public service; and personal accomplishments that serve as a model for present and future Clemson students. This year's award recipients are: William Kelly Durham ’80, Palmer E. “Satch” Krantz ’72, E. Symth McKissick III ’79, Goz Segars ’66, Charles Sullivan ’66, Ted Westmoreland ’56.

A United States Coast Guard medallion will complete the set of those signifying military branches at Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium and Scroll of Honor Memorial, thanks to the Class of 2012. The class has chosen the installation of the last service seal as its senior project. The Scroll of Honor and Memorial Stadium, adjacent to each other, tie together in honoring Clemson alumni who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Foundation Hiring for CFO Position

Foundation Hiring for CFO Position

Reporting to the President and CEO, the Chief Financial Officer will set Clemson University Foundation's financial policy and direction while also being an active participant in the organization's overall strategy, development and execution. The CFO will lead all financial administration, business planning and budgeting. The position is responsible for direction and management of the organization's treasury activities, including procurement, custody of assets and is a key participant in the portfolio investment process. A bachelor's degree and at least 5 years experience in treasury functions, foundation financial systems, portfolio investment analysis, or policy administration is required. The successful candidate may also have a master's in a business related field or CPA to supplant certain experience requirements. The Clemson University Research Foundation (CURF) has named Catherine “Casey” Porto as its executive director. Porto comes to the foundation from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory where she was a senior vice president.

Class of ‘56 Academic Success Center Building Opens

The new home of the Class of 1956 Academic Success Center at Clemson University will be dedicated at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 12. Class members, who will be on campus for the celebration, raised more than $2.8 million as seed money for the construction of the building located behind R.M. Cooper Library. “We’re proud to have our class associated with a program with a mission to help students succeed in the classroom,” said John M. Blackmon Jr., Class of 1956. “From now on, when students enter this building to get tutoring and other help, they’ll know that Clemson alumni paved the way for their success.”

Reconnection Through Cancer

Reconnection Through Cancer

Stephanie Williams and Kristin Carver grew up friends in Maryville. After high school they went their separate ways. Williams went to the University of Tennessee. Carver went to Clemson University, then to medical school and training to be a radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. Their paths did not cross often until Williams was diagnosed with breast cancer. Through cancer Williams reached out to her old friend and came up with a new product for women who have had a mastectomy.

Show your Stripes at National Week of Service

Clemson Clubs and groups across the country will participate in a National Week of Service this week. Designated “Every Tiger Cares,” the events will take place April 10-17 at locations that span the nation. The Clemson University Alumni Association is encouraging clubs everywhere to take part in service projects in their communities that weekend. Individual alumni who are not part of an area group also are encouraged to wear orange and volunteer.

Clemson Scientist Receives NIH Grant

Clemson University researcher James Morris received a $360,079 competitive renewal grant from the National Institutes of Health to continue his study of Trypanosoma brucei, the single-celled parasite that causes African sleeping sickness. “African sleeping sickness and other tropical diseases are not only major global health problems, they are tied to poverty, war and a lack of access to education," Morris said. "Fighting these diseases is a necessary step to improving the quality of life in these regions of the world."

3rd Annual Clemson Alumni Challenge Golf Tournament

The Clemson Alumni Association invites you to participate in the Third Annual Clemson Alumni Challenge Golf Tournament. The tournament is limited to 20 teams. Compete for bragging rights to be the best Clemson Alumni golf foursome and the chance to represent Clemson on the national stage. The winning team of the Clemson Challenge will represent Clemson in the Acura College Alumni Team Championship, November 1-4, 2012.
