752 Students Receive Degrees; Alumnus Honored

Clemson University awarded 752 degrees August 10th at the summer graduation ceremony. With family, friends and faculty looking on, the students crossed the stage at Littlejohn Coliseum to get degrees and President James F. Barker’s congratulations. At the ceremony, 337 received bachelor’s degrees, 357 master’s degrees and 58 doctorates.

Gymsitters Child Care Service is Back

Gymsitters Child Care Service is Back

The Gymsitters child care service is back this Fall. This is a service that was started approx. 9 years ago to provide child care during select home football games that have kickoff at 3pm or earlier for children ages 3-10. This year’s dates are: Sept. 8, Sept 15, and Nov. 10 (pending kickoff time TBA). The cost is $50/child and includes a nutritious snack, arts and crafts item to take home, t-shirt, time with certified staff.

Trustees Approve Budget, Program Changes

Clemson University trustees approved the university’s budget of $859.8 million for fiscal year 2012-13, heard a report on fall enrollment and approved several program modifications at its quarterly meeting on campus July 19th. Provost Dori Helms said both graduate and undergraduate applications were up this year.

Family Honors Member with Ring Donation

In memory of William B. Robinett (’55) and in celebration of the 60th anniversary of his graduation, a Class of 2015 Clemson Ring was donated to the Alumni Association Ring Case on Friday, July 20th, 2012. Clemson University is multi-generational within the Robinett and Agee families. In attendance were his wife, Marian Robinett; his children, Greg (Pat) Robinett and Sharon ’72 (Mike ’72) Agee; his grandson, David ’99 (Kathryn) Robinett and his great-grandchildren (and future Tigers) Madilyn, Logan and Gabriel. Not able to attend were his grandsons, Matthew Robinett, Jeremy (Hannah) Agee, and Tyler (Gail) Agee who both attended Clemson.

Numeral Society Alumni Reunite

Over 200 Clemson Numeral Society alumni fraternity brothers and their guests recently enjoyed a great day of brotherhood and reconnecting at a reunion held on the waterfront of Lake Murray in SC. Founded in 1956, Numeral Society was the first Greek organization on campus in the post-military years and remained until 1970, when Numeral Society became Sigma Alpha Epsilon national fraternity. $3,000 was raised for a contribution to the Clemson Fund. To increase this donation, designate a gift to the Numeral Society Annual Scholarship today.

Sigma Alpha Zeta Alums Give Back

Over 85 Sigma Alpha Zeta Fraternity brothers and wives attended the ribbon-cutting for the Sigma Alpha Zeta Presentation Studio located on the second floor of the Cooper Library. The fraternity raised over $50,000 to provide a place where students will rehearse a speech, fine tune a presentation, review a power point slide show or prepare a proposal for an internship or job interview in a conference setting.

Researchers are collecting and harvesting enzymes while maintaining the enzyme’s bioactivity. Their work, a new model system that may impact cancer research, is published in the journal Small. Enzymes are round proteins produced by living organisms that increase the rate of chemical reactions.

Student Researches Make Runways Safer

Clemson researchers redesigned and modified a mobile drill press to retrofit a section of a runway that halts overrun aircraft, ultimately minimizing aircraft damage and passenger injury. The process of retrofitting the end of a runway at Greenville Downtown Airport required more than 80,000 holes to be drilled in the concrete.

Alumni Gather During London Olympics

More than thirty students, alumni and Tiger Band members were in attendance at an alumni reception at Porters English Pub in Covent Garden, London on the evening of August 1st. Sponsored by the Alumni association and hosted by VP of Advancement, Neill Cameron and wife, Jill, the participants enjoyed hearing from special guests, President and Mrs. James Barker, Tiger Band director, Dr. Mark Spede, and some current students who were in London.

Atlanta Clemson Club Golf Tournament

The Atlanta Clemson Club will host their 2nd Golf Tournament at the prestigious Historic East Lake Golf Course during the Clemson vs. Auburn Weekend on Friday, August 31st. Shotgun Start is at 1pm. All proceeds help fund the Club’s $25,000 pledge to the Clemson Golf Team's new practice facility. Registration includes a caddie, a locker set up in the Members’ locker room, range balls, valet parking, a post event reception, complimentary Budweiser products and much more. The Grand Prize Winner gets an entry to Tiger AM to be held on December 7, 2012 at the Greenville Country Club's Chanticleer Course. Black Alumni Host Freshmen Sendoff Receptions

Clemson Black Alumni Council and the Clemson Alumni Association hosted special receptions for the newest members of the Clemson family during August. Three minority incoming freshmen gatherings were held in Atlanta, GA at the home of alumna Vikki Harps ‘87, in Anderson, SC at the Civic Center Park and in Charlotte, NC at David and Mechel Murdaugh’s home. Over one-hundred incoming freshmen, parents, alumni and current students enjoyed networking, presentations from Clemson departments, food and fun making for very successful sendoff events. CAFLS Alumni Tailgate and Golf Tournament

The College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences (CAFLS) 19th Annual Alumni Tailgate Saturday, October 6th and the 14th Annual Golf Tournament will be held Friday, October 12th at the Walker course benefiting the Tom Skelton Scholarship. The South Carolina Farm Bureau CAFLS Alumni Tailgate festivities are scheduled to begin 3 hours before kickoff of the Clemson vs. Georgia Tech football game at Fike Recreation Center and will feature a silent auction, departmental displays and a SC Tasty Tailgate which includes a chicken sandwich lunch. PGA Championship Alumni Reception Recap

Close to 250 Clemson Alumni gathered at the Marriott Courtyard in Charleston, SC the evening of August 9th to celebrate their common bonds at a reception hosted by the Clemson Alumni Association. Many were in town for the PGA Championship being held at Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. In addition to enjoying food and beverages together, the attendees were honored to get the inside scoop on the PGA Championship, Clemson golf, and much more from esteemed, award-winning writers from Sports Illustrated, Michael Bamberger, Alan Shipnuck and also the Publisher of Sports Illustrated Golf Group, Dick Raskopf.
