Clemson Alum Tends to History
Dean Norton, a Clemson Graduate with a degree in horticulture, now works to preserve a part of history. Norton has been the director of horticulture at George Washington’s Mount Vernon home since 1980. He will soon rank as the longest-serving director of horticulture at the estate, which is designed to look exactly as it did when Washington died in 1799.

From Soldier to Student
For Daniel Rodriguez, a 24-year-old Army veteran attending Clemson on the GI Bill, playing college football is a dream that has been a long time coming. Rodriguez joined the army after high school and fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, where he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star with Valor for his efforts. He appeared at the top of the hill waving the American Flag in honor of Military Appreciation Day on Saturday’s game against VT.

The Clemson Show Car designed by marketing students in a Creative Inquiry class partnering with NASCAR driver, Mike Wallace generated nationwide awareness of student engagement projects at Clemson University. The students are ready to race the Clemson Branded Race Car and they need YOUR help. Mike Wallace will drive the car in the Ford EcoBoost 300 on Nov. 17 in Homestead, FL as part of the Ford Championship Weekend. Students want Clemson University to become one of the first universities to have a "branded" car in the NASCAR series and need your help. Paper, Plastic or Reusable?
In the United States alone, billions of plastic, paper and nonwoven fabric grocery bags are used every year. After they are used or reused, most are recycled or go into landfills. Clemson researchers will study the impact of grocery bag materials on the environment through research funded by Hilex Poly, LLC. The company has awarded $179,864 to the university for an analysis of the environmental impact of the most commonly used grocery bags.

Clemson University graduate student Daniel Lind has received a STAR award from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). The awards recognize key contributors in the Hispanic community in the fields of science, technology, math and engineering (STEM). Eyewitness Account of Harvey Gant’s Enrollment at Clemson University
As part of the 50th Anniversary of Integration Lecture Series, photographer Cecil Williams will speak on his experiences chronicling the integration of Clemson University and other Civil Rights milestones in South Carolina. Williams is a photographer, videographer and author of three books in which he explores his experience as an African American photographer during the Civil Rights Movement in the Deep South. He is scheduled to speak at 7:00pm on October 25, 2012 in the Brackett Hall Auditorium.

Tigers Celebrate Military Appreciation Day
The Clemson University Athletic Department paid tribute to veterans, fallen soldiers and those now serving in the armed forces as a part of the Military Appreciation Day program Saturday, Oct. 20. Events included special recognition of Maj. Rudolf Anderson, a ball run from Greenville to Clemson by both Clemson and VT ROTC, and a 5-by-1 mile relay race between Clemson and VT Cadets that ended at the Scroll of Honor.

Tigers Turn Boston Orange
Clemson Tigers gathered in Boston at two spectacular events hosted by the Clemson Alumni Association on the evening prior to the Clemson vs. Boston College game. Over 200 Clemson alumni, family, and donors gathered at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, for “Orange Paws and Red Sox.” The evening was filled with lots of laughter and, of course, lots of lobstah. Across town, another 200 local and traveling Tiger fans attended the “Beantown Bash” at the Black Rose in downtown Boston. Echoes of cadence counts and tiger rags got the crowd pumped for the game which the Tigers won the next day!

Young Alumni Fall Band Party Rocks
All young alumni were invited to attend the first ever Young Alumni Fall Band Party on Friday, October 19 at Tiger Park in Clemson, SC. All 400 young alumni that attended the event had a wonderful time. Attendees enjoyed catering by local brewery Thomas Creek (Greenville, SC), snacks by local food truck Neue Southern (Greenville, SC), sounds from Sandy B and the Allstars, and an after party at the Esso. The Young Alumni Council is eager to plan next year’s event and thanks everyone who participated.

6th Annual Men’s Lacrosse SoCo Tournament
Clemson’s men’s club lacrosse team will host their sixth annual Southern Comfort Tournament October 27 - 29th at Nettles Park in Clemson. This round robin tournament hosts both college and high school teams in order to promote growth and development of the sport. Come out and support our Tigers Saturday and Sunday when they play teams like VT and Wake Forest! Athletic Director Receives Prestigious Award
For the last 11 years, Terry Don Phillips has served as Clemson’s Athletic Director. He was recently presented with the Bobby Dodd Athletic Directors Award at the Division I Athletic Directors Convention in Dallas, TX. Phillips and his accomplishments were announced Saturday at the Clemson vs. Virginia Tech football game and will be celebrated at the Hall of Fame banquet in his honor.

Coach of the Year Voting
Show your support for football coach Dabo Swinney in Liberty Mutual’s 2012 Vote for Your Coach 2012 competition. Though the coaches take home a trophy, the real winners are each coach’s favorite charity and their school’s alumni association. Each winner receives $50,000 to donate to charity, and a $20,000 grant to donate to their school’s alumni association. The Clemson Athletic Ticket Office has put single-game tickets on sale for the 2012-13 men's basketball season home games to both IPTAY members and the general public. A limited number of season tickets are still available for $290 each in the upper arena.
