Alumni Band Celebrates 30 Years

Alumni Band Celebrates 30 Years

Homecoming at Clemson is about honoring tradition, and this year, former members of the Clemson University Tiger Band will return to Death Valley to “shake the southland” once more during the homecoming game against Maryland on Nov. 10. Entitled “300 for 30” in celebration of the 30th anniversary of alumni band, this year’s event will bring together 382 former band members representing 21 states and 51 graduating classes, rendering the largest attendance in alumni band history.

The Bioengineering Department recently announced that it has established the first program to train engineers to recycle and reprocess medical devices. The Medical Device Recycling and Reprocessing Certificate Program offered by the Clemson University Biomedical Engineering Innovation Campus was developed in response to the recent, dramatic growth in medical device reprocessing.

Hartzog Award Honors Conservationists

Julian Agyeman and Reed Noss will be among several people recognized at the George B. Hartzog Jr. luncheon and lectures at Clemson University. The luncheon and awards ceremony were at noon on Oct. 30. The lectures were at 2pm on the 30th and at 11am on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Agyeman is a professor in and chairman of the department of urban and environmental policy planning at Tufts University. Noss is Provost’s Distinguished Research Professor at the University of Central Florida and president of the Florida Institute for Conservation Science.

Lee Hall Expansion Honored

Lee Hall Expansion Honored

Clemson University’s Lee Hall III academic building has been awarded LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. Completed in April of this year, Lee III is a 56,000 sq. ft. expansion of the original Lee Hall and the academic home of the School of Design and Building and the department of art. Lee III was designed to teach sustainability by example, making use of lighting and energy efficiency, ventilation technology and resourceful materials selection.

Rediscovering the Hunley

The H.L. Hunley, built in 1863, was responsible for the first submarine attack in naval history. In 2000, the Hunley was raised from its muddy grave of 136 years in Charleston Harbor. Between January 2007 and August 2012, Michael J. Drews, a former Clemson faculty member, oversaw the excavation, restoration, and conservation of the Hunley and its contents. As it turns out, the technologies used to build the Hunley were more advanced than ever imagined!

We need your help! The Alumni Association is looking for its next Board Members and Honorary Alumni. We are currently accepting nominations for four seats on the Board scheduled to become vacant on July 1, 2013. If selected, an individual would serve a three-year term on the Board, concluding on June 30, 2016. We are also accepting applications for Honorary Alumnus. Physics Alumni is Out of This World!

Physics Alumni is Out of This World!

Earlier this year, astrophysicist Dirk Terrell (‘87) discovered the existence of the first known planet orbiting twin suns in a distant star system that is also orbited by a second set of stars. The planet, named PH1, is what scientists are calling a circumbinary planet in a four-star system and is the subject of a paper presented Monday at the annual meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Reno, Nevada.

Alumna Gives Back in the Classroom

Alumna Gives Back in the Classroom

Ashely Cowden, a Clemson almuna and Fair Play, SC native, was awarded the Phillip Prince Award for Innovation in Teaching. Cowden is a professor in the English department and the assistant director of the Pearce Center for Communication. The award, presented by the CU Student Government, is bestowed to an outstanding teacher who demonstrates creative and novel teaching in the classroom.

Clemson $2 Turn 35

In 1977, right before Clemson was scheduled to play Georgia Tech, the administration at Georgia Tech said they were going to call off the game. As the executive director of IPTAY at the time, George Bennett came up with an idea to show Georgia Tech how important the Clemson game was, especially for Atlanta's economy. It was a simple, yet genius idea — "Let’s flood them with $2 bills." Bennett’s idea quickly became a tradition that has lasted 35 years.

Deep Orange

Clemson automotive engineering students unveiled the "Deep Orange 3" at the 2012 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) on October 31. Deep Orange 3 is a third generation Deep Orange prototype designed and engineered by students; basically it’s a whole new vehicle inside and out. The annual show, held in Las Vegas, attracts more than 120,000 attendees and more than 2,000 exhibitors.

Grant Provides for Toxicants Research

William S. Baldwin, who is in Clemson's College of Agriculture, Forestry & Life Science, received $363,083 from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences to study how industrial chemicals and other toxicants affect environmental and human health. Baldwin, a Clemson University metabolic toxicologist and professor in the biological sciences department, is also researching the connections between toxic exposure and diet.

Psych-ed About Pedestrians

Clemson University psychology professor Rick Tyrrell has been awarded the 2012 A.R. Lauer Safety Award from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society. His research focused on nighttime vision of pedestrians. Tyrrell and his team, who conduct research on open roads and on test tracks, have shown that in typical nighttime conditions pedestrians can incorrectly believe that they are visible to approaching drivers. They have also documented that drivers overestimate their ability to see pedestrians.

Students Help Others Rise Above

Every Sunday, 15 Clemson students trek to Generations Group Home to hang out with the boys who live there. Every Sunday, these boys - who are at the home to receive care for past sexual abuse charges - get to play ball, learn new games, practice their social skills and learn how to heal from past mistakes. Additionally, each semester the Interfraternity Council hosts a Generations tailgate — one for football and one for baseball. The boys get to go to the game, take a campus tour and just see what "normal" is like.

To say Professor Grant really likes trains is an understatement. With two dozen books and many scholarly articles about locomotives under his belt, many see him as a train authority. He is publishing a new book, Railroads and the American People, of which the Wall Street Journal notes, "With its wealth of vignettes and more than 100 black-and-white illustrations, Railroads and the American People does a fine job of humanizing the iron horse."

Honoring Our Shared Legacy

The annual Legacy Day celebration at Fort Hill will be taking place on Friday, November 16 from 2:00-4:00 pm. This is an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of philanthropy as we recognize the day Thomas Green Clemson signed his will that set the University in motion! Once again the actual document will be on display at the house for all to see and there will be free shirts and giveaways for all students who take a tour of the historic home. A short leaf dedication ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm to honor the 2012 inductees into the Fort Hill Legacy Society. Come leave your mark at Fort Hill on November 16!

Blue Key Honor Society invites you to the 56th annual Tigerama on Friday, December 9, 2012. The event will be held in Littlejohn Coliseum beginning at 7:00 pm. Tigerama kicks off the homecoming weekend by showcasing student talent and pepping up Tiger fans from all over for Saturday’s Homecoming game. This year our Masters of Ceremonies will be Clemson student and current Miss South Carolina, Ali Rogers and former Clemson quarterback and television personality, Tribble Reese.

Clemson Names New Athletic Director

Dan Radakovich, director of athletics at Georgia Tech, was introduced Monday (Oct. 29) as Clemson University's new Athletic Director, concluding a three-month national search that drew more than 30 candidates. In announcing the decision, President Barker described Radakovich as the right person to build on the strong foundation created under the leadership of current AD Terry Don Phillips, who announced his plans to retire in August.
