2012 Roaring 10 Young Alumni Awards

Congratulations to the inaugural class of the Roaring 10! The award, sponsored by the Young Alumni Council, recognizes ten young alumni for their impacts in business, leadership, community, educational, and/or philanthropic endeavors. The honorees were recognized during a reception on Friday, November 16th in the Alumni Center Lobby and on field during the game on Saturday, November 17th.

DesignIntelligence magazine has named Clemson University’s graduate program in architecture one of the nation’s Top 10 programs among all public universities in its annual publication “America’s Best Architecture and Design Schools.” Clemson ranks fourth among public universities in the South. The publication also named Clemson architecture professor Daniel Harding one of the "30 Most Admired Educators for 2013."

Clemson Enhances the Election

Clemson Enhances the Election

Students and faculty in the Clemson University Cyber Institute’s Social Media Listening Center (SMLC) gathered and delivered comments from social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs for the live, nine-hour webcast WSPA-TV news anchor Amy Wood hosted during the November 6th election. Clemson’s Social Media Listening Center is housed in the university’s College of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

Cumulative Giving Society Gala

The spirit of philanthropy has flourished at Clemson since the first generous gift of Thomas Green and Anna Calhoun Clemson. During a dinner and gala on November 16th, faculty, students and staff celebrated those individuals who have demonstrated their faithful support of the University through significant financial gifts over the years. Participants enjoyed a special presentation by “60 Minutes” Correspondent and Anchor and Managing Editor of “The CBS Evening News”, Scott Pelley before the induction of new members to the Cumulative Giving and Legacy Societies. We are grateful to these partners who help us build an even greater Clemson!

Homecoming Recap 2012

Homecoming Recap 2012

The 2012 Homecoming celebration was packed with fun events from exciting Tigerama performances to a big win on the football field. Student organizations built floats on Bowman Field to honor Thomas Green Clemson and the spirit of 1889. At Tigerama, Katie Barnes was crowned Homecoming Queen and President Barker showed off a few of his dance skills. During the game on Saturday, representatives from Southern Living crowned Clemson the winner of the South’s Best Tailgate and more than 300 alumni band members returned to shake the southland one more time.

Remembering Our Legacy

Remembering Our Legacy

Clemson University celebrated its history and honored its founders at Legacy Day on Friday, Nov. 16, at Fort Hill, the historic home of Thomas Green and Anna Calhoun Clemson. The event featured tours of Fort Hill, food, a scavenger hunt for historical facts and trivia in the house and music by the Clemson University String Quartet and the Clemson University Gospel Choir.

Clemson received a $60,000 grant from the Alcoa Foundation to expand and improve its game-day recycling program. It will help with the goal of reaching 45,000 more fans and adding 350 student volunteers. The grant will fund more than 100 new recycling stations and buy a Segway to help promote recycling at football games.

Engineering Mechanics Alum Receives Award

The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education have named Autar Kaw, a University of South Florida mechanical engineering professor and Clemson Alum, a 2012 U.S. Professor of the Year. Kaw was feted Thursday in events at the National Press Club and the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. He is one of four professors – selected from more than 300 nominees – to receive the award that is considered the nation’s highest honor for undergraduate teaching.

Clemson senior Raven Magwood believes that dedication, determination and discipline are the sources to her success. The 19 year old has already achieved greatness, including becoming a motivational speaker, writing a book and hosting a television show on My 40. After she graduates in December, finishing college in just four semesters, she plans to continue speaking and writing.

Brooks Performing Arts Center Director Honored

Friends of the Brooks Center and other donors gave $136,680 to name the stage for Lillian “Mickey” Harder, director of Clemson University’s Brooks Center for the Performing Arts. The announcement was made at the Brooks Center’s season-opening show with Kennedy Center Honors recipient Barbara Cook. Harder has been the director of the performing arts center since 1996.

Decipher Magazine Launched

Decipher Magazine Launched

Decipher is a new magazine by and about the Creative Inquiry program. Almost all of the articles were researched and written by CI students, and the magazine itself was designed and developed by two graphic communications undergraduate students. This past year, seven students set out to research, record, and convey stories of a selection of Creative Inquiry projects. Barbara Speziale, director of the Creative Inquiry program, launched a new project to develop a Creative Inquiry magazine. Together, they created Decipher. This magazine’s primary goal is to communicate the importance of these impressive Creative Inquiry projects taking place on the Clemson campus, in South Carolina and throughout the world.

From Outer Space to Second Grade

NASA astronaut Col. Patrick Forrester, an adjunct professor in the College of Health, Education and Human Development, brings a different perspective to the world of education. In his NASA career, he made four spacewalks and coordinated five spacewalks for other astronauts. Now he visits local schools, including Clemson Elementary, as a part of Clemson’s STEM program to promote math and sciences in South Carolina schools.

Professor Honored as Inaugural President Endowed Chair

Clemson named professor Juan Gilbert the first Presidential Endowed Chair in Human-Centered Computing. The Presidential Endowed Chair recognizes the accomplishments and dedication of current faculty at Clemson University. President James F. Barker bestowed the Endowed Chair Medallion upon Gilbert during an investiture at the Madren Conference Center & Inn. The bronze symbol represents the university’s most prestigious academic position.
