Clemson must have thought it was in for a long night after what could only be called the most inauspicious of starts. Instead, the Tigers showed the mettle to produce one of their most meaningful wins of recent vintage.

Former Astronaut Encourages December Graduates

On December 20th, Clemson University awarded 1,200 degrees at the December graduation ceremonies. Retired Gen. Charles Duke Jr., a former NASA astronaut and the 10th man to walk on the moon, spoke at graduation, encouraging the new alumni to strive for new horizons. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree. Congratulations to all of the new graduates for their accomplishments!

Kiplinger Ranks Clemson Among Best College Values

Kiplinger magazine has rated Clemson University among the best values in public higher education in its ranking of the "100 Best Values in Public Colleges" released December 27th. Clemson ranked 34th for in-state students and 39th for out-of-state students and is ranked highest on the best values list among South Carolina schools. The rankings were based on a variety of factors that matched quality of education with cost.

Alumni Helps Recover Remains in Vietnam

Huy Tran, a captain at Grand Forks Air Force Base, returned to his native Vietnam this summer as an interpreter for a recovery team searching for three Navy flyers whose plane crashed in the during the Vietnam War. Although Tran grew up in Rock Hill, SC, his experience of living in Vietnam helped him understand various cultural nuances, customs and political sensitivities. Tran hopes to use his linguistic abilities on future missions to Vietnam and help bring closure to more families.

Recent Alumna Makes History

Recent Alumna Makes History

At the December 20th graduation ceremonies, Ala Qattawi became first woman in the country to earn a Ph.D. in automotive engineering. Qattawi’s work involves concept cars and establishing a scientific approach for the design of structural origami in folded sheet metal. Prior to Clemson, Qattawi studied industrial engineering at the Jordan University of Science and Technology, and she hopes her accomplishments will inspire more women to pursue careers in engineering.

"Balloting" Voting Revolution

"Balloting" Voting Revolution

A team of Clemson University graduate students has developed an alternative voting method using QR codes called "balloting." Professor Juan Gilbert, who leads the team, says that with balloting, the voter’s screen will indicate their selection in a review screen, where individuals can change their selections and then print them. The Clemson researchers developed a queuing model to analyze the results and report the average wait time based on the number of voting machines, voter arrival rate and other information. Hopefully "balloting" could one day lead to shorter wait times in voting lines!

Mazer Tops Communication Charts

Mazer Tops Communication Charts

Assistant professor Joseph P. Mazer has been named in the top 1 percent of published communication scholars in the past five years by the journal Communication Education. The study aimed to identify prolific communication studies scholars based on their publication rates in 24 journals from 2007 to 2011. Mazer, the youngest on the list of 3,500 scholars, was ranked number 21. Professor Mazer is associate chairman of the communication studies department in the College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities and is director of the college’s Social Media Listening Center.

Professor Named Fellow of International Science Group

Professor Named Fellow of International Science Group

Ken Marcus, an analytical chemistry professor, has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. As an analytical chemist, Marcus develops instrumentation for the determination of components in various materials. He has been published in multiple journals and is a member of the editorial advisory board for four international journals. He will be named in the new Fellows induction ceremony in Boston in February.

Team Wins Danisco Competition

Team Wins Danisco Competition

A team of food and packaging sciences students brought home first place in the New Product Contest of the 2012 Danisco Knowledge Award competition, held in September. It was the second year in a row that a Clemson team won the contest, and they received a $10,000 prize! The winning team created “Harvest Fresh Fruit Smoothie - Run Blue,” an on-the-go, nutrient-dense beverage, while another Clemson team placed 3rd with their "Blast Rasmint Sorbet."

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Integration

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Integration

A banquet will be held at 5:00pm on January 26, 2013 in the Madren Center Great Hall ballroom to celebrate the 50th anniversary of integration. Jonathon Romain has been commissioned to prepare a commemorative art piece, and there will be an exhibit showcasing his other artwork prior to the gala. Romain will have a limited number of prints for purchase. Charles Ogletree, the Harvard Law School Jesse Climenko Professor of Law, and Founding and Executive Director of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race and Justice, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet. Ogletree was also named one of Ebony Magazine’s 100 Most Influential Black Americans in 2006 and 2007.
