Past to PresentWhen South Carolina's leaders in business, education, and public policy came together for a summit in 1993 their collaboration created the Statewide Systemic Initiative (SSI). With the support of the National Science Foundation, the SSI was instrumental in leading schools through changes associated with the creation of mathematics and science curriculum standards and the implementation of the Palmetto Achievement Challenge Test (PACT). Through the SSI, regional resource centers then known as "Hubs" were established so that all teachers would have quick and convenient access to substantive professional development, teaching resources and instructional improvement expertise in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) content areas.. Since then, South Carolina has achieved much in raising expectations and accelerating achievement in mathematics and science education. Still, the measures for success, as set by No Child Left Behind legislation, and concerns with recent international student performance comparisons, continue to rise. SCCMS remains steady in focus and strong in resolve to guide and sustain STEM education efforts that help South Carolina become an economically competitive, educationally innovative, and scientifically savvy state.
