Goals and Principles

1. Establish the reputation of CU-ICAR as a nationally recognized model and showcase for engineering advances and economic development that push the forefront of technology and opportunities for Clemson faculty, students and people from around the world. (Top 20 by 2011)

  • Create an innovative, state-of-the-art facility and highly imageable setting that attracts quality faculty and research, providing recognition and presence to CU-ICAR and Clemson University in Greenville.
  • Showcase and celebrate engineering, automotive research and personal mobility trends as key components of the CU-ICAR facility.

2. Create an inviting, engaging quality setting that brings people together, facilitates exchange, and fosters partnering and collaboration.

  • Create an interactive environment, with a mix of uses and activities, that fosters collaborative partnerships appeals to the creative class of technology researchers.
  • Provide an integrated, pedestrian-oriented campus setting that creates a sense of community and that physically connects the broad range of expertise available at CU-ICAR.
  • Create distinct character zones defined by type of activity and by level of public access that reflect the Clemson Experience and Clemson values.

3. Embody sustainability as a basic value and strategy to enhance the natural resources and environmental qualities of the CU-ICAR setting and to create development of lasting quality.

  • Create a model for sustainable economic development that minimizes environmental impacts and that seeks to restore and balance the environmental resources of the CU-ICAR site.
  • Provide a stimulating, supportive and healthy environment for all people involved in CU-ICAR activities.

4. Establish a physical plan that communicates the overall development goals and priorities of the CU-ICAR to Clemson University, future partners, city, county and community stakeholders.

  • Provide a physical framework for future development that supports overall flexibility and adaptability for phased growth and future implementation.
  • Apply CU-ICAR Design Guidelines to early phases of development to demonstrate the design intent and spirit of the CU-ICAR campus.
