BMW Corporation and the State of South Carolina have endowed a tenure-track chaired faculty position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis in Vehicle Systems Integration. Its role is to support the research and educational mission of the newly created Clemson University International Center for Automotive Research (CU-ICAR). At the heart of CU-ICAR is the Graduate Program in Automotive Engineering with a focus on Product Development and System Integration. This program is being developed to address the growing need in the automotive industry for research and workforce training in the area of vehicle system/platform integration. The program will be housed in a dedicated state-of-the-art facility at Clemson’s International Center for Automotive Research in Greenville, SC. Current plans call to supplement the current faculty on the main campus with four senior, world-class chaired faculty members in systems integration, design and development, electronic systems and manufacturing, and six tenure-track faculty members, closely associated with the chaired faculty members.

The Endowed Professor will be a member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering faculty. Individuals with backgrounds in the different engineering disciplines as applied to vehicle system and sub-system integration and performance, design and manufacturing are especially encouraged to apply. Leading candidates for the position will possess the following attributes:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Automotive, Electrical, Industrial, Systems,
    Aerospace or Materials Science).
  • 10+ years beyond Ph.D., with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industrial experience. A strong knowledge and experience base in the global automotive industry with significant connections to leaders in the industry is expected.
  • International recognition as demonstrated by publications and participation in international forums such as standard boards, symposia and conferences.
  • Leadership evidence either in an industry or academic setting.
  • Communication skills and the ability to work with diverse and competing groups.
  • Demonstrated vision, creativity and resourcefulness; collegial, consultative management style allied with the ability to be strong and decisive; excellent listening skills; well developed public speaking and communicating abilities; personal grace and polish; and the highest degree of personal integrity.
