Barnwell County Library (update)
| Name | Terri S. Smith | | Situation | Barnwell County had a need of a new facility for their library. They had been out of space since 1989. A beautiful home had served as the library for 50 years, but those years had taken its toll on a structure that was not made to hold many books. Barnwell had also been struggling to keep its downtown viable and thriving. When a large business closed its doors, an opportunity was made available to acquire the building and renovate it for a library. There was no money available for this project. | | Response | Extension was asked to train the board and a group of volunteers in organizing and running a capital campaign. It was quickly decided that they would need professional help to raise $3.5 million. Clemson Extension helped in the training of the volunteers.
1. Participants will learn how a capital campaign is executed.
2. Participants will have training in how to solicit funding and grants.
3. Participants will have strategic planning for their capital campaign. | | Impact | Through our efforts, Barnwell County has opened its new library facility and has raised $3.2 million for the effort. There are 25 new volunteers that have been trained and worked hard to make a dream come true for all the citizens of Barnwell County. They also renovated a branch library in the town of Blackville. Both facilities have new computers that will help in workforce development for the citizens of the county. Both the main facility and the branch will help in revitalization of both downtown areas. |
