Leadership Participants Gain Insight Into Need for Sustainability
| Name | Bob Guinn | | Situation | There is general scientific agreement that the world is warming. Additionally, within a few years, global oil production will not produce adequate supplies to meet increased worldwide demand. While most people understand the price of gas at the pump and also local weather, few adults have considered the long term trends reflected in these issues. Public policy and policy makers need to be informed of these trends so as to provide proper planning for their local communities. | | Response | Leadership programs are a valuable tool to elevate leadership skills and also increase awareness about emerging issues. One such issue is the concept of sustainability of our communities and the trends that impact our way of life. Presentations were developed to increase awareness of
sustainability and to reflect current thinking relating to peak oil and
climate change. These presentations were given on opening day of leadership programs with individuals from Lexington, Hampton,Allendale, Bamberg, and Barnwell Counties. Trends relating to peak oil and climate change were discussed featuring power point presentation and films. | | Impact | Approximately 65 participants in local leadership programs gained a new awareness of trends that will soon impact our future and way of life. Lifestyle changes were discussed and also the impact on local government. Discussions generated questions about funding such items as fuel for buses for the local school systems, the ability to produce jobs and economic development for rural counties, and also how government might enhance local energy supplies by developing local bio-fuels
projects. |
