Community Benefits from Local Leadership Program
| Name | Bob Guinn | | Situation | Coastal counties in South Carolina are experiencing tremendous growth. In Beaufort and Jasper County, over 50,000 building permits have been issued with developers continuing to express interest in developing additional plots of land. With growth comes the need for infrastructure, not only physical but also social. Governmental committees, advisory boards, non-profits, and other social structures are needed to assist with the growing population and citizen involvement in local government decision making. | | Response | In 2007, 25 individuals elected to join the Beaufort County Senior Leadership Progam. The program consisted of 12 day sessions with topics covering history, education, economic development, human services, local
government, military, law enforcement, arts, health, and environment. With over 70 speakers, 12 site visits, research on local topics, and interviews with local elected politicians, 23 students graduated on March 12, 2007. | | Impact | Research has indicated that over 70% of students graduating form the Senior Leadership Program were still involved in a significant community activity three years after graduation. Historically, many of the graduates volunteer to be on boards but have also been inspired to write books detailing local history, assist in local schools as tutors, direct operations for Habitat for Humanity, and assist with affordable housing. A survey is currently being conducted to detail the benefits of this program to the local community and results will be published soon. |
