Covering the World with Security Blankets

Situation

South Carolina has been impacted by Operation Iraqi Freedom. Thousands of South Carolina's troops are fighting for our country everyday and even more are leaving. The SC National Guard has over 2000 troops leaving in April 2007. 4-H/ OMK (Operation Military Kid) has attended all the National Guard Briefings, Reserve Briefings, and Family Days to provide a positive youth program to the children of the troops as well as working with the Active Duty and Reserve 4-H military youth throughout South Carolina.

Response

At the briefings and family days and 4-H military clubs, one of the favorite activities that the children would do was make a blanket for each of the brigades and/or squadron. The blankets are printed with each branch of the military service to represent them. The ends of the blankets were cut and each child would tie a knot for love to their parent that was deploying as well as signing the blanket with a message of love, safety and prayers. At each of the briefings, the blankets were given to the troops by the children. All of the blankets will be traveling with the troops during their deployments.

Impact

Brigadier General Bob Livingston was so touched that he has all the SC National Guard Brigades taking the blankets with the messages from the children to help them stay secure while on their mission. Over 500 children of the deployed troops attended the briefings and family days. The children are sharing their security blankets with those who fight to keep us all safe and secure. At the Clinton, SC deployment briefing, deploying soldiers' children and Operation Military Kids representatives presented Brigadier General Bob Livingston a tapestry that includes each child's hand written name. The tapestry includes children's names from other briefings, and will travel with the brigade when they deploy to Afghanistan.
