Executive Summary

Broadly defined, biochips are engineered devices and systems possessing a chip component and a biologically derived component. Within this simple combination lies a dominant theme for the 21st Century. This theme combines the three major jauganauts of the 20th Century microelectronics, biotechnology and information technology. The participants are wide and varied, as are their backgrounds and intersection with the filed. The chip substrate may be as simple as a glass microscope slide or as complex as a fully integrated microfluidic system with associated microelectronics and MEMS devices. The biologically derived component may be molecular(enzymes, antibodies, DNA), organelle (mitochondria, cell wall), cellular (neuronal cells, islet cells), or tissue (liver slices) based. With this diversity of options, biochips have emerged as a major field of study, active product development and commercial activity.

The Biochips Handbook seeks to be the definitive treatise on the state of the science, technology and applications of biochips as we begin the 21st Century. With contributions from world-renowned authors, the Biochips Handbook is divided into five thematic areas:

  • Molecular Bioelectronics and Bioelectrochemistry
  • Biosensors
  • DNA Microarrays
  • DNA, Protein and Cellular Biochips
  • Signal Processing and Bioinformatics

The first section captures the growing potential for bioelectronic devices involving direct electronic communication with biologically active molecules, the emergence of catalytic antibodies and the potential for biocatalytic thin film transistors. The emerging emphasis on biosensor systems that go beyond the confines of the biotransducer and embraces sample capture and sample preparation, microfluidics delivery and handling, data capture and presentation is addressed in the second section. The third section is dedicated to the range of possibilities in DNA Microarray technologies and the emergence of alternative formats and detection schemes. The fourth area addresses the diverse possibilities that arises from the use of robotic and micofluidic dispensing systems with proteins and whole cells. Finally, measurement science and technology will be incomplete without the significant role of signal processing techniques and bioinformatics.
