Summer undergraduate interns
participate
in the research activities of the C3B in one of several ways. (i)
Through the NSF REU Program centered in the Department of Chemistry
at VCU. Students seek admission to the NSF REU Program and two
students are assigned each year to research activities and topics
within the C3B. (ii) VA Biotechnology Internships sponsored by the
Virginia Center for Innovative Technology (when available). (iii)
Corporate sponsors may provide funding to support the scholarship
activities of an undergraduate student during the summer months. (iv)
The C3B supports two summer interns each year to work with a
designated C3B faculty member. Summer undergraduate interns generally
receive a stipend for the 10-week
summer research experience. Apply to the Center Director.
C3B
Science and Engineering Summer Internship (SESI) Program for Rising
High School Seniors (RHSS)
(4 weeks):
The Center for Bioelectronics,
Biosensors and Biochips (C3B) hosts a summer research experiences
program for rising high school seniors. Each year, two
appropriately qualified rising sensors are selected to join the
undergraduates, graduates, postdoctoral fellows, research associates
and faculty of the C3B for a 4-week program of research
exposure around the various research topics of the C3B. The student
becomes immersed in the research activities of the project and works
under the close supervision of graduate students. Students learn to
use library resources, conduct simple experiments, attend research
forums and seminars, and set the stage for scinence fair quality work.
The selected student(s) will be encouraged to develop a research plan
that should result in a presentation before the Jr. Academy of Sciences
or a suitable Jr. Science Fair. The SESI-RHSS
applicant is expected to be enrolled
in science and math AP courses; should have a competitive GPA of 3.5
or better, and should present a persuasive letter of recommendation
from their high school science coordinator along with a completed
copy of this application.
Research Experiences for Science
Teachers (REST) Program (8/4 weeks):
The Research Experiences for
Science Teachers (REST) Program at the VCU Center for Bioelectronics,
Biosensors, and Biochips (C3B) provides annual opportunities for two
high school science teachers to become involved in the ongoing research
and advanced training in selected areas of the C3B. Annual REST
selectees work along side a faculty member, postdoc associates, and
graduate students in a specifically designed 8-week summer research
project that is intended to give the teacher exposure and familiarity
with a cutting edge area of engineering in the life sciences. In the
following summer, the Science Teacher returns for a 4-week period in
order to develop classroom instructional materials and a program to
implement aspects of their previous summer's experience in their
classroom. Apply to the Center Director submitting a cover letter,
statement of intent, a complete CV and academic transcripts.
